BISMARCK, N.D. - Spurred on by four decisive pins on the night, the University of Mary Wrestling team enacted their revenge against their rivals from upstate, Minot State University.
Â
The Marauders (3-6, 1-2 NSIC) secured the dual win long before the match got to the final bouts that squelched any hope the Beavers (3-4, 0-3 NSIC) had to mount another comeback as U-Mary dominated the mat in a 37-10 win.
Â
Josh Jensen had an easy night as he took the forfeit at 125 pounds, putting U-Mary on the other side for once as the Marauders had to surrender six points in every match in the previous season at the same weight class.
Â
Instead, that left
Tate Barnhardt as the unofficial start to the dual and he delivered a performance that would not disappoint leading off with a quick takedown and four-point nearfall in the first period over Colton Nichols for an easy 6-0 lead going into the second. The score made little difference as Barnhardt chose bottom in the frame, earned a quick escape and immediately went for the fast takedown, eventually outlasting Nichols to get the pin at 3:50 into the bout for a 12-0 U-Mary lead. Barnhardt currently leads the team with 11 pins on the year.
Â
Reed Cronin followed that up as he filled in for
Rudy Guillen at 141 pounds against Tanner Crissler, but Cronin ensured the end result would be the same despite giving up a takedown in the first period. Cronin fought back for an escape in the second coupled with a takedown of his own, but an escape from Crissler evened the score at 3-3 heading into the third.
Â
Crissler chose bottom in the period and scored the quick escape but Cronin went straight on the offensive as he notched the takedown followed by the immediate four-point nearfall for a commanding 9-4 lead with a minute remaining. Crissler failed to record any points through the remainder of the bout and the 9-4 decision from Cronin gave U-Mary a convincing 15-0 lead.
Â
Up next was
Jakob Weisbrod who ran into a tough matchup at 149 pounds against Cody Haugen as the Beaver scored a takedown in the first frame, but an escape from Weisbrod in the first, followed by another in the second after choosing bottom, meant the score was tied at 2-2 heading into the third.
Â
Haugen chose bottom and escaped the position rather quickly and strung two takedowns together for the eventual 7-3 decision, finally putting Minot State on the board at 15-3.
Â
Dane Fischer put U-Mary back on the winning path as he scored the hard-fought takedown of Jered Sublet at 157 pounds in the first period and the referee had barely signaled the takedown before calling the pin at 1:03 for the Marauder to put the score at 21-3 favoring the home team.
Â
The next bout was less than ideal for the U-Mary as
Paul Michaelson took on Marcus Polak at 165 pounds in a bout featuring three reversals, two by Polak and one by Michaelson, in the final frame as the Marauder desperately looked for an advantage. Unfortunately, the Beaver won out for a 14-6 major decision to inch Minot State closer on the scoreboard at 21-7.
Â
Riley Nagel got the bill at 174 pounds against Carlos Toledano and it was a bill he would certainly comp as Nagel held the 5-0 lead heading into the third frame after scoring a takedown in the first to go with an escape and takedown in the second on Toledano.
Â
Toledano chose neutral in the third and it would be a choice he would regret as Nagel scored a fast takedown into in an immediate four-point nearfall that never made it to the scorebook as the referee signaled the pin at 5:27 into the bout.
Â
Dylan Mitzel got the second start of his career at 184 pounds against Briley Crissler in what would be the matchup of the night as Mitzel commanded the early portion of the first period with a takedown and four-point nearfall. Crissler battled back for an escape and takedown of his own to put the score at 6-3 favoring the Marauder, and after choosing bottom, the Beaver recorded the reversal in the opening minute but not before Mitzel fought for the escape to maintain his 7-5 lead heading into the third.
Â
Mitzel chose bottom in the period and after a hard-earned escape, followed up with a takedown in the final minute and held on for the pin at the 6:21 mark for the fourth fall of the night in favor of the Marauders, setting the score at 33-7.
Â
Tom DeVito made his first appearance of the year at 197 pounds against Tiger Paasch and DeVito proved to be experienced enough to avoid the double-overhook trap that sunk the Marauders in the Battle for the Barrel. Paasch did score a takedown in the opening minute but DeVito capitalized on the favorable position barely a minute later as the Beaver went for the same takedown attempt only to give up the takedown to the Marauder followed by a four-point nearfall to close out the frame at 7-2 with DeVito on top.
Â
DeVito earned the escape and another takedown in the second period and eventually scored two more takedowns in the third, coupled with the riding time point, for the 15-5 major decision, making his return to the mat a favorable one for both himself and the team.
Â
With the team score secured for the Marauders at 37-7,
Travis Smith took on Mitchel Eull at 285 pounds that started off slow with neither grappler scoring a point in the first period. Eull took ahold of the lead in the second as he recorded the four-point nearfall after Smith chose bottom in the frame, but the escape from Smith proved too late to do any serious damage.
Â
Eull selected bottom in the final frame and earned an escape after Smith took away the riding time point, but couldn't connect through the remainder of the period as the Beaver came away with a 5-1 decision, finalizing the team score at 37-10.
Â
The Marauders will head out on the road for the next two weeks as they travel to Kearney, Neb., on January 16, to compete in the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. U-Mary will take on Colorado School of Mines starting at 9:00 AM in the first of four duals on the day.
