THIS WEEK: The University of Mary Wrestling team returns to Bismarck after a two-week hiatus to host the No. 2 ranked St. Cloud State University Huskies. The Marauders will take on the Huskies on Saturday, January 30, starting at 2:00 PM CDT, in the McDowell Activity Center
HISTORY: U-Mary had their hands full with the #2 Huskies last year as St. Cloud State pitched the second shutout in as many weeks for U-Mary. The Marauders lost 45-0 to Upper Iowa University in the week before taking on St. Cloud State in the 2014-15 season and fell 49-0 to the Huskies in the dual. The Huskies scored three falls at the 133, 157, and 174-pound bouts, took a forfeit at 125 pounds, notched a tech fall at 141 pounds, an injury default at 184 pounds, two major decisions at the 197 and 285-pound matchups, and two decisions at the 149 and 165-pound matchups as
Dane Fischer and
Riley Nagel had the closest bouts on the day.
LAST WEEK: The Marauders resumed their NSIC schedule as they took on Southwest Minnesota State University and Augustana University.
Josh Jensen,
Tate Barnhardt, and
Jakob Weisbrod got U-Mary off to a hot start against the Mustangs as Jensen scored a 9-3 decision over Taylor Curtis, Barnhardt pinned Antonio Miekel at 4:05, and Weisbrod took a 6-1 decision over Paul Norgren. Yet Southwest Minnesota State recorded a fall at 165 pounds, a tech fall at 174 pounds, and a major decision at 184 pounds to make up for the lost bonus points.
Tom DeVito cruised to an 8-4 decision over Ashton Barlett at 197 for a glimmer of hope, but Travis lost a narrow 1-0 decision to Cole Wilson at 285 for the 24-15 loss. Jensen and Barnhardt got U-Mary off to another fast start in the dual against Augie with Jensen taking an 8-6 decision over Javier Vieyra and Barnhardt recording an 18-1 tech fall over Adrain Lozano, but the Vikings took the next eight matches for the eventual 34-8 win.
BARNCAT TOUGH: Tate Barnhardt took home another U-Mary Barncat Tough Wrestler of the Week Award after his strong showing over the weekend agaisnt Southwest Minnesota State and Augustana. Barnhardt started off the contests with a strong showing against Meikel with the Marauder firing off a string of takedowns in the first period and maintained his pace with another takedown in the second before finally pinning Meikel at the 4:05 mark of the bout. Barnhardt follwed that up with a 18-1 tech fall against Lozano after going up early at 8-1 after the first period and capped off the bout in the final period on a takedown only 18 seconds into the frame for the 18-1 score.
NEXT WEEK: The Marauders will make their last road trip of the regular season as they head east to Moorhead, Minn., to take on Minnesota State University Moorhead, on Sunday, February 7, starting at 3:00 PM CDT.
