Close Matchups Leave U-Mary on Losing End of Dual against Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Putting up another tough fight in a majority of the matches, the University of Mary Wrestling team took on Augustana University this afternoon to wrap up the weekend.

The Marauders (5-10, 1-4 NSIC) took over the first two bouts of the dual akin to yesterday's match, but the Vikings' (14-2, 3-0 NSIC) experience won out through the remainder of the dual to hand U-Mary a 34-8 loss.

Josh Jensen took over in the first bout at 125 pounds against Javier Vieyra, with the Marauder pacing the matchup in the first period with a takedown followed by an escape from the Viking heading into the second frame.

Vieyra chose bottom in the period and scored the quick escape, but Jensen went right on the offensive with another takedown before Vieyra notched another escape. Jensen maintained the momentum in the final period as he earned an escape after choosing bottom and fired off another takedown, but Vieyra remained tough through the rest of the match as he notched one final takedown in the final seconds. The last-second attempt wasn't enough to secure a win as Jensen won his second match on the weekend with an 8-6 decision.

Tate Barnhardt took on Adrain Lozano at the 133-pound matchup in a bout dominated by the Marauder as Barnhardt held an 8-1 lead after the first frame with two takedowns and a four-point nearfall. Barnhardt followed that up with an escape after choosing bottom in the second, and strung together another takedown and four-point nearfall for a commanding 14-1 lead heading into the third period.

Barnhardt completed the tech fall attempt in the final stanza as he scored the final takedown of the bout only 18 seconds in and gave the Marauders an 8-0 team lead at 5:18 into the matchup with an 18-1 tech fall.

Reed Cronin took on Brandon Charbonneau at 141 pounds and the Viking appeared to have control of the bout through the first two periods after a trio of takedowns for a 7-2 lead going into the third frame. Cronin notched a hard-fought escape early in the third and seized control of the momentum with another takedown, but he couldn't score additional points as Charbonneau held on for a 7-5 decision.

Jakob Weisbrod was up next at 149 pound against Colin Ayers and the first period was highlighted by an extended scramble as both grapplers looked to score a takedown in the opening seconds. Neither wrestler could complete the scramble in the opening moments and Ayers took the lead at the midpoint of the period with a takedown before Weisbrod fought for the escape. Ayers recorded another takedown before the end of the period, though, for a 4-1 lead going into the second.

The second frame was lacking action as Weisbrod chose bottom and was flagged for a stall warning late in the period. Though the match was relatively even through the first two periods, Ayers took over in the final as he fired off three takedowns and scored the riding time point to take the 11-3 major decision and put the team score at 8-4 in favor of the Marauders.

Dane Fischer got the bill at 157 pounds against Shawn Hatlestad and the Viking held a 5-1 lead after the second period after recording to takedowns and an escape, in comparison to Fischer's lone escape. The Marauder slowly took over the bout in the final frame as he chose bottom, recorded the escape, and successfully executed a takedown to cut Hatlestad's lead to 5-4.

Unfortunately, the Viking proved tough for Fischer to score additional points and squirmed away with an escape to go with his riding time point for a 7-4 decision.

Paul Michaelson and Mitchell Rechtzigel put on a good show as both grapplers were evenly matched throughout their bout at 165 pounds, with the score tied up at 5-5 after the second period as Michaelson scored the first takedown and two-point nearfall in the opening seconds only to be followed by Rechtzigel's escape and two takedowns.

The Viking chose bottom in the final period and after a brief scramble into the escape, and followed up with another takedown for the 9-5 lead. Michaelson scored another escape before the end of the match but couldn't recorded any more points as Rechtzigel took away the 9-6 decision.

The bout between Tim Weber and Riley Nagel was less than favorable for U-Mary as Weber recorded the pin at the 4:02 mark of the bout at 174 pounds, and the end result of the 184-pound match was similar as Aero Amo pinned Jacob Green at the 2:20 mark.

Tom DeVito had a dominating performance against Lane Lettau in the 197-pound matchup as the Marauder held a 5-2 lead early in the third period. Yet Lettau took advantage of a brief scramble into a takedown and eventually pinned DeVito at the 5:54 mark, extending Augustana's lead on the scoreboard at 31-8.

The heavyweight matchup between Travis Smith and Michael Lowman was a constant back-and-forth affair with neither grappler recording any takedowns throughout the entire match. Lowman held the narrow 1-0 lead in the final period due to his escape in the second and Smith was quick enough to score an escape of his own to tie it up at 1-1, but the riding time favored Lowman, which meant Smith needed a takedown before the end to come away with the win.

Smith fired off two takedown attempts and the first one was easily stopped by Lowman, but the second one turned into a hard scramble in the waning seconds of the bout with Smith desperately trying to steal the win.

Unfortunately that wouldn't be the case as Lowman took home the 2-1 decision, putting the team score at 34-8.

The Marauders will be back home in Bismarck next week as they take on St. Cloud State University on Saturday, January 30, starting at 7:00 PM in the McDowell Activity Center.
