THIS WEEK: The University of Mary Wrestling team will put a pause on the conference schedule as they head south to Kearney, Neb., to compete in the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The Marauders will take on the Colorado School of Mines, New Mexico Highlands University, Chadron State College, and Newman University in the regional meet.
HISTORY: U-Mary went 0-4 in the same duals last year as they dropped matches to both Chadron State, 33-9, and Colorado Mines, 31-9, and fell before the University of Central Missouri, 32-18, and Lindenwood University, 41-3.
Travis Smith went 2-2 in the duals with a pin of Jake Weber from Chadron State at 2:14, followed by a pin of Marshall Purtee from Central Missouri at 4:03.
Paul Michaelson is another veteran of the duals as he went 1-3 last year with his lone win coming against Logan Cairer from Colorado Mines with a 7-5 decision.
LAST WEEK: The Marauders returned to the mat to start off the new year with a conference dual against Minot State University. The Beavers stole the win in the Battle of the Barrel in the first meeting as they were behind 16-9 heading into the final two bouts and got a pin and a decision for an 18-16 comeback win. U-Mary ensured that would not be the case in this match as they took a forfeit at 125 pounds with
Josh Jensen going unopposed, followed by
Tate Barnhardt pinning Colton Nichols at 3:50,
Reed Cronin securing the 9-4 decision over Tanner Crissler,
Dane Fischer recording the blistering fast pin at 1:03 over Jered Sublet,
Riley Nagel getting the pin of Carlos Toledano at 5:27,
Dylan Mitzel pinning Briley Crissler at 6:21, and
Tom DeVito making his first appearance of the year with a strong 15-5 major decision over Tiger Paasch.
BARNCAT TOUGH: Reed Cronin earned the Barncat Tough Wrestler of the Week award after his strong showing against Tanner Crissler in the 141-pound matchup versus the Beavers. Both wrestlers were evenly matched through the first two periods as they each recorded a takedown and escape for a score knotted at 3-3 going into the third. Cronin came to life in the frame after Crissler chose bottom and scored a quick escape for the 4-3 lead, but Cronin went straight on the offensive as he scored the takedown almost immediately and transitioned into a successful nearfall attempt. The four-point nearfall from Cronin essentially locked up the decision at 9-4 as Crissler failed to notch a point through the remainder of the bout, putting U-Mary comfortably in the lead at 15-0 through three weight classes.
NEXT WEEK: The Marauders will remain on the road next week as they will pay a visit to Marshall, Minn., and Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, January 23, before taking on Augustana University on Sunday, January 24.
