GRAND FORKS, N.D. - With their final match of the weekend under wraps, the University of Mary Women's Tennis team took on Bemidji State University on neutral ground today.
Â
The match was close up until the end when
Meredith Holt came through for U-Mary (4-9, 4-5 NSIC) in the super tiebreaker match to defeat her opponent, Caley Westin, and secured the victory, 5-4, over the Beavers (2-8, 1-7 NSIC).
Â
The Marauders, fresh off a win from the previous day, took on Bemidji State in the early morning and started off with the doubles matchups to begin the match.
Â
Sarah Janes and
Catherine Gibbens took on Shaylin Prout and Deanie Hatch in the first spot, but the Bemidji State duo took the first matchup of the day, 8-6, in a close battle between the pairs.
Â
Holt, along with
Courtney Brackin, took on Westin and Rachel Franklin in the number-two spot, and the Marauder pair proved too much for the Beavers as they secured the first win of the match for U-Mary, 8-5.
Â
Kate O'Connell and
Anastasia Bruss got the call at the number-three spot for the Marauders and they cruised to an 8-1 victory over Claudia Bellew and Sabrina Okeson.
Â
With U-Mary holding the momentum heading into the singles matchups it was only a matter of time before something had to go wrong and it manifested in the number-one singles matchup between Janes and Prout.
Â
Janes provided a tough matchup with Prout through the first set as the Bemidji State player only held a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately, Janes had to retire as her injury from earlier in the year made it increasingly difficult to play. So rather than risking re-injury, Janes bowed out of the matchup and Prout came away with the win.
Â
Janes' teammates were there to pick her up as Bruss and Brackin both won their matchups in singles. Bruss defeated Bellew at the number-four spot in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2, while Brackin did the same against Justine Scheller at the number-six spot, 6-4 and 6-3.
Â
Bemidji State bounced back in the number-five singles matchups as Franklin defeated O'Connell in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2, and they got the win at the number-two spot between Gibbens and Hatch, but not before the Marauder took the matchup into super tiebreaker.
Â
Hatch won the first set over Gibbens 7-6, but Catherine fought right back in the second set and won, 6-3. Hatch ultimately took the matchup in the super tiebreaker as she secured the win, 10-3, but not before Gibbens gave her a run for her money.
Â
So with the match all tied up at 4-4, it came down to the number-three singles matchup between Holt and Westin. Holt took the first set, 6-3, but Westin came right back in the second set and tied it up, 6-3. It was only fitting that the super tiebreaker, in a tied match, needed extra sets, as going to 10 wasn't enough to get the win. Holt fought hard and ultimately came out on top as she secured her win, and the win for U-Mary, with a stunning 12-10 victory over Westin in the super tiebreaker set.
Â
With one more week to go in the regular season, the Marauders will take on Upper Iowa University and Winona State University, starting on April 11, at another neutral site in Fargo, N.D.
