ST. PETER, Minn. - The University of Mary Women's Tennis team is on the road for spring break as they first face Minnesota State University on Friday, February 27, before taking on Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, February 28.
Â
The Marauders (1-4, 1-4 NSIC) will take on the Mavericks (3-2, 3-2 NSIC) as U-Mary is coming off their first match win of the year against the University of Sioux Falls in a close 5-4 contest that was decided by three games going to tiebreaker.
Â
U-Mary stumbled a bit out of the gate as they fell to Minnesota State University Moorhead, the University of Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State University, and Augustana College, but they will have the advantage of
Sarah Janes returning to the starting lineup.
Â
Janes, along with
Meredith Holt and
Eileen Leong, took their matches into the tiebreaker with Janes and Holt both coming back from one set down.
Â
Janes' match was punctuated by a 6-1 deficit that she had to fight back from while Holt duked it out with her opponent in a second set showdown that saw plenty of deuces en route to Holt securing a 7-5 victory.
Â
The Mavericks own wins over Sioux Falls, Southwest Minnesota, and Winona State University, but were bested by Augustana and Upper Iowa University. Minnesota State is a combined 1-17 in match losses but own a 21-6 record in match wins.
Â
The Mustangs (1-6, 0-5 NSIC) have lost matches against the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota State, Augustana, Winona State, Upper Iowa and Sioux Falls, and have a win over Gustavus Adolphus College.
Â
The weekend's matches will serve as a precursor for the Marauder's trip out to Oklahoma.
Â
The spring break trip will feature matches against Cameron University starting on Monday, March 2, before they take on Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Tuesday, March 3, a match against East Central University on Wednesday, March 4, and will close out the trip against the University of Central Oklahoma on Thursday, March 5.
