Marauders Lose Close One to Minnesota Duluth, 5-4

SARTELL, Minn. - The University of Mary Women's Tennis team took on the University of Minnesota Duluth today, in another Northern Sun matchup for the Marauders. The match came down to the doubles teams and the Marauders (0-3, 0-3 NSIC) ended up falling to the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-0 NSIC), 5-4.

Catherine Gibbens stepped up for the second day in a row as she won her singles match against Alyssa Brunelli at the number one spot in convincing fashion, 6-4 and 6-2.

Meredith Holt provided a strong effort as she defeated Kara Saemann at the number two spot 6-0 and 6-4.

Anastasia Bruss got her first singles decision of the year as she defeated Shelby Benkofske at the number three spot 6-1 and 7-6 after the second set went to tiebreaker.

Eileen Leong provided a glimpse into her abilities as she defeated Drew DeCorsey in the number four spot in three sets after dropping the first one 6-4, but taking sets two and three 6-4 and 10-6, respectively.

Courtney Brackin got the call at the number five spot against Kaitlin Wohnoutka, and the Bulldog came away with the victory in consecutive sets, 6-1 and 6-3.

Kate O'Connell came in for U-Mary at the number six spot but fell to Jillian Klasen in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2.

Unfortunately for the Marauders, the doubles matchups proved the deciding factor as U-Mary is still searching for their first doubles victory of the year.

Holt and Leong were paired up against Brunelli and Saemann, and the Bulldog duo outlasted the Marauder pair as the final score ended 9-8 in favor of Minnesota Duluth.

O'Connell and Gibbens took on DeCorsey and Benkofske at the number two doubles matchup, and the Bulldogs took that matchup 8-7 after going to tiebreaker.

Bruss and Brackin were billed at the number three spot in the doubles matchup and they ultimately fell to Emma Bartels and Katie Baasch 8-4.

The Marauders return home next week to take on Augustana College and the University of Sioux Falls, starting on Saturday, February 21, at the Capital Racquet and Fitness Center.
