U-Mary Takes on Minot for Battle of the Barrel Prior to NSIC Schedule

THIS WEEK: The University of Mary Wrestling team will take on Minot State University in a non-conference dual for the Battle of the Barrel in Minot, N.D., starting at 7:00 PM. U-Mary will then host Upper Iowa University for the start of the conference schedule with the Peacocks visiting on Friday, December 11, starting at 7:00 PM

HISTORY: U-Mary split with Minot State last year in two duals as the home team took each match on the year. Minot State won the conference dual at 31-12 with the Marauders picking up wins from Paul Michaelson, Riley Nagel, John DeVito and Travis Smith; while the Marauders hosted the Beavers a week later for the Santa Claus dual with U-Mary taking a 23-17 win behind victories from Hunter Menendez, Alec Lindsey, Michaelson, Kyle Schultz, John DeVito, and Corey Parsons.

LAST WEEK: The Marauders had a busy week as they hosted Concordia College and the University of Jamestown in the first triangular of the year, and U-Mary got off on the wrong foot as the Cobbers took their dual at 29-10 despite wins from Dane Fischer, Jacob Green and Travis Smith. U-Mary rebounded with a convincing team win over the Jimmies with head coach Adam Aho recording the first shutout of his coaching career at 47-0. Jamestown gave up forfeits at the 125 and 141, but still had victories from Tate Barnhardt, Jakob Weisbrod, Fischer, Michaelson, Nagel, Jonathan Pelach, Green and Smith. U-Mary then headed east to take on Long Island University Post in a neutral site match in Moorhead, Minn., and the pioneers took the team win at 32-16 as the Marauders got wins from Josh Jensen, Michaelson and Smith. The weekend ended up on a high note as the Marauders sent nine wrestlers to the Dragon Open hosted by MSU Moorhead, and U-Mary ended up placing seven of them in the tournament with Jensen, Smith, and Barnhardt taking first in their respective weight classes, Noah Huff took third in the 133-pound bracket, Cronin and Dylan Mitzel both placed fourth in the 141-pound and 174-pound bracket, respectively, and Ray Young took sixth in the highly contested 133-pound bracket.

BARNCAT TOUGH: Josh Jensen was named U-Mary's Barncat Tough Wrestler of the Week after a productive outing against LIU Post and at Dragon Open. Jensen made short work of Tyler Walsh from LIU Post as the Marauder scored an early takedown and immediately went for the pin and won by fall at the 1:28 mark. He followed that up with a first place showing in the Red Division 125 Bracket, after pinning Jordan Aquino from St. Cloud State at 40 seconds, coupled with a major decision over Jared Goldsmith from MSU Moorhead and a decision over Brandon Briggs from St. Cloud State.

NEXT WEEK: The Marauders will wrap up the 2015 calendar year with another home dual against Minnesota State University as U-Mary hosts the Mavericks for the annual Santa Claus Dual, starting at 7:00 PM, in the McDowell Activity Center.
