This Week: The University of Mary Men's Soccer team kicks off their final homestand of the season with two matches this week starting against Saint Martin's University on Thursday, October 8 at 7:30 PM, followed up with a match against #18 Seattle Pacific University on Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 PM; both matches will be at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
Coverage: Live stats will be available at goumary.com/coverage
SMU: The Saints are 2-6-1 on the year with a 1-4-0 record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Saints started out the conference schedule with losses to Seattle Pacific, Concordia University (Ore.), Northwest Nazarene University, and Simon Fraser University, before finally breaking through with a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University last week for their first win in conference. Saint Martin's is led by #10 Kyle Witzel, who leads the team this year with three goals on 19 shots for six total points. He will have plenty of help on the offensive end of the pitch as six other players have recorded one goal on the year, but #8 Kaleb Strawn will be the secondary point of attack as he adds two assists to his lone goal on the year for four total points. #1 Nick Rosato will likely get the start in goal as he has made seven starts and nine appearances on the year with 20 goals allowed and 43 saves for a .683 save percentage.
SPU: The Falcons had remained largely unchallenged at the top of the conference but have stumbled a bit en route to their 6-1-2, 2-1-2 GNAC record on the year. Seattle Pacific defeated Saint Martin's to open up the conference schedule, but played Northwest Nazarene and Concordia (Ore.) to draws in back-to-back matches. The Falcons bounced back with a 2-1 win over Western Washington but were toppled out of the top spot after losing a close 1-0 match to Simon Fraser on the road last week. #20 Ian Adams and #10 Danny Olivas will provide a dual-pronged approach as both players have recorded two goals on the year with Adams adding two assists and Olivas recording one of his own. In total, eight different players have recorded a goal for Seattle Pacific as they do a good job spreading the wealth to all corners of the pitch. #1 Cody Lang has started every match in goal for the Falcons and he has responded with only three goals allowed with 25 saves and a .893 save percentage.
Next Week: The Marauders finish their final homestand with matches against Concordia (Ore.) on Thursday, October 15 at 4 PM, followed by a match against Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 PM.
Last Week: U-Mary struggled to get the offense going during both matches in the past week as they were shut out twice, first a 2-0 loss to Northwest Nazarene and again versus Concordia (Ore.). Both matches started out as defensive battles as the Marauders would not allow a single goal in 22 shots combined on the two matches in the first half. Unfortunately, the momentun couldn't be carried into the second half as both Northwest Nazarene and Concordia (Ore.) registered both of their goals in the second frame after finally wearing down the Marauder's defense. U-Mary took a combined 16 shots in the matches but only five came on goal, meanwhile the opposition took a combined 49 shots, including 14 corner kicks, with 19 shots coming on goal.
