RAPID CITY, S.D. – Taking advantage of a shorthanded foe, the University of Mary men's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 draw with #23 Ft. Hays State University.

Playing in the GNAC/MIAA Challenge, the Tigers (1-1-1 overall) lost two players to red cards. The Marauders (0-0-1) pressed the advantage but could never get a deciding goal.

The nationally-ranked Tigers opened the scoring on a Damian Cooper goal in the 37
th minute.

U-Mary took advantage of FHSU mistakes to pull even in the second stanza. With the Tigers already down a man after a red card in the 53
rd minute, the Marauders were awarded a penalty kick in the 58
th minute.

Aaron Mc Elwee was saved by FHSU goalkeeper Jason Babyak, the Tigers backstop was given a red card at 57:29. This forced FHSU to play 9-on-11 for nearly 53 minutes, including overtime.Â

Mc Elwee was awarded a penalty kick and was stoned by replacement keeper Kent Fruend. However Fruend was unable to control the shot and Mc Elwee beat everyone to the loose ball to score at 57:29 to knot the game at 1-1.

Despite making every effort to score, Freund kept the Marauders out of the net. After FHSU held a 10-4 advantage in shots in the first half, U-Mary had a massive 16-5 edge in shots in the second stanza and a 20-7 advantage for the final 65 minutes.

Jack West made 11 saves for the Marauders, including two in the second overtime. Babyak made three saves and Freund 7 for the Tigers. Â

The Marauders conclude the weekend with a match against Southwest Baptist University on Sunday, Sept 14, at noon in Rapid City.
