RESULTSMINNETONKA, Minn. — The No. 2 seed University of Mary tennis team (13-3) won its eighth consecutive match as it defeated No. 7 seed University of Sioux Falls (5-6) Saturday morning in the opening round of the Northern Sun Women's Tennis Tournament.
The Marauders have not lost a match since March 8 when they fell to Eckerd College and have not lost to a conference opponent since Feb. 15 when they were defeated by Augustana College.
U-Mary's most consistent doubles pair all season,
Hallie Welk and
Kate O'Connell won their fourth straight match at No. 2 doubles to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead. The combination of
Sarah Janes and
Catherine Gibbens extended U-Mary's lead to 2-0 winning their fifth straight win at No. 1 doubles.
Forcing a tiebreaker,
Anastasia Bruss and
Meredith Holt fell 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

With a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, Welk won her eighth consecutive match at No. 1 singles. The Cougars took fifth and sixth singles, but Holt won her fourth straight match at No. 4 singles. With a 4-3 lead and needing to win either No. 2 or No. 3 singles, the Marauders Gibbens sealed the victory with 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Janes was on her way to winning at No. 2 singles, taking her first set 7-5 and leading 4-0 in the second, but with U-Mary sealing the victory the match was not finished.

With the win U-Mary advances to the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament and will face No. 3 seed St. Cloud State University. The Marauders defeated the Huskies at home 5-4 in the regular season.
