Mendez mobbed at the plate after her first inning grand slam in game one
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D.—A pair of Taylor Mendez home runs, one in each game, highlighted the University of Mary (30-18, 15-9 NSIC) softball team's sweep of Wayne State College (33-15, 18-8 NSIC) on Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The Marauders took the first game 13-2 in five innings and concluded the sweep with a 3-2 win Friday afternoon.

A grand slam in the first game by Mendez gave U-Mary an early 4-1 lead en route to a 13-2 five inning win. With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two and the score tied 2-2, Mendez drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a walk-off home run.

GAME 1

The Marauders started the day with a splash loading the bases with a hit and two walks, before Mendez delivered a grand slam to left to give U-Mary a 4-1 lead. Mendez's home run was one of three bombs for the Marauders in the opener as they won 13-2 in five innings.

Mendez finished the game 3-for-3, with three runs scored. Erin Keen was 2-for-2 in the game with a double and four runs batted in.

With a 4-1 lead in the second inning, Alana Norman delivered an RBI single to left field to score Francine Villalobos, who also singled.

U-Mary started the third inning with fireworks as Amber Gamboa and Julissa Perales hit back-to-back home runs to left field. After Mendez doubled and Demaree Rodriguez singled, Erin Keen hit a ball to the gap in left center for a two RBI double to give the Marauders a 9-1 lead.

Wayne State led off the fourth with back-to-back doubles to score a run, but the Marauders added four more runs in the bottom of the inning on four hits, including a two RBI single up the middle by Keen as U-Mary took a 13-2 lead.

Pitching strong all game, Cherlyn Trujillo struck out two of three batters in the fifth to secure a 13-2 five inning win for the Marauders. Trujillo finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

U-Mary had 13 hits in the game, including seven extra base hits.

GAME 2

Appearing to be headed to extra innings with the score tied 2-2, the bases empty and one out, Mendez had different plans as she delivered a game-ending home run to secure a sweep for the Marauders with a 3-2 win.

U-Mary had just five hits in the game, but three of them were home runs. The Marauders scored all three of their runs on home runs as Allison Brown, Rodriguez and Mendez each delivered solo shots.

Leading off game one with what appeared to be a home run, but was ruled a double, Brown hit a no-doubter to center field on the first pitch of game two as the Marauders took an early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats responded in the third inning as they followed a one-out single with a two-run home run to left field to take a 2-1 lead. It took until the fifth inning, but U-Mary answered back with a leadoff solo homer by Rodriguez to knot the score at 2-2.

With one out in the seventh Keen surrendered a single and was relieved by Trujillo. Keen went 6.1 innings strong and struck out two, while walking just one.

Needing just three pitches, Trujillo picked up her second win of the day (15-8) inducing ground ball double play to end the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the inning and the score tied 2-2, Mendez delivered her second home run of the day with a walk off home run to secure a 3-2 win.
