Marauders end 2026 season in defeat to the Mustangs

BISMARCK, ND – The 2026 season came to an end for the University of Mary softball team (13-39, 3-27 Northern Sun) as the Marauders lost a doubleheader to Southwest Minnesota State University (31-25, 17-13 NSIC). UMary lost game one 9-2 and game two 17-6.

The Marauders hosted their senior day after the doubleheader. UMary honored Ariane Sims, Janelle Bergmann, and Francesca Villaneda for their contributions to the University of Mary.

GAME 1 University of Mary 2 SMSU 9

Madison Schamanski gave the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, smashing her second career home run over the center field wall.

The Mustangs tied the game up in the top of the fourth inning with a sac fly. Janelle Bergmann robbed SMSU of a three-run homer to keep the game even. Two solo home runs in the sixth inning would give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead. SMSU exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 9-1.

UMary got a run back in the bottom of the seventh after Francesca Villaneda hit a single to right field to bring home Schamanski. The Marauders did not add on any more runs, and the game ended 9-2 in favor of the Mustangs.

Arria Johnson got the start and threw 5.1 innings. Johnson allowed three runs and struck out one batter. UMary finished the game with six hits and no walks, while SMSU had 14 hits and one walk.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Madison Schamanski went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs scored, and one RBI.

Francesca Villaneda went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-3.

Lalaina Baker went 1-for-3.

Jenel Mallari went 1-for-3.

GAME 2 University of Mary 6 SMSU 17

SMSU jumped out to 8-0 after the first two innings. The Marauders responded with two runs in the third inning after Janelle Bergmann laced a single to right field, scoring Jianna Cota and Jenel Mallari.

Olivia Gomez scored in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch. Mallari then smacked a single to right field to bring home Ariana Retuta. SMSU got a run back in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 9-4.

The bottom of the fifth saw Gomez drive in two more runs after she smashed a double to right-center field, bringing in Lalaina Baker and Bergmann.

The Mustangs exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 17-6 lead. Madison Schamanski led off the seventh inning with a double to left field. UMary could not bring her home as the game finished with an SMSU victory.

The Marauders recorded 13 hits and one walk, while the Mustangs had 19 hits and three walks.
