Gamboa's 4-for-4 effort, Keen shutout highlight Marauders sweep of Beavers

Gamboa finished game one 4-for-4 with three doubles and Keen picked up her 13th win of the season with a shutout in game 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEMIDJI, Minn.—Scoring its second most runs against a Northern Sun opponent in program history in game one, the University of Mary softball team (28-18, 13-9) swept Bemidji State University (11-27, 0-22) Tuesday afternoon. Winning 17-1 in the opener, U-Mary concluded the sweep with a 5-0 win in game two.

The Marauders finished the day with 27 hits, including 11 extra base hits.

GAME 1

Highlighted by a nine run third inning, the Marauders scored early and often in a 17-1 rout in the opening game of the day.  All nine players either scored a run or had an RBI and all nine players recorded a hit in the game.

Freshman Amber Gamboa was the star of the game going 4-for-4 for the second time this season. Blasting three doubles in the game, Gamboa had four RBI and scored three runs.

The offense started immediately for the Marauders as Allison Brown opened the game with a single to centerfield. A double by Kristin Ormsby and Gamboa followed with RBI doubles to give U-Mary a 2-0 lead.

After adding a run in the second, the Marauders sent 12 batters to the plate as they exploded for nine runs in the third on seven hits. Seven of U-Mary's runs in the inning came with two outs. The inning was keyed by a three-run home run by Julissa Perales, her eighth of the season.

Ahead 12-0, U-Mary surrendered a home run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Marauders responded in the fifth by adding five runs on six hits.  Alana Norman, Ormsby and Gamboa singled, doubled and doubled respectively to start the inning; Perales walked, and Taylor Mendez, Demaree Rodriguez and Francine Villalobos each hit safely before the Beavers could record an out.

With a 16 run lead the Marauders allowed three hits in the bottom of the fifth, but held on for a 17-1 five-inning win.

Mendez and Ormsby each went 3-for-4 in the game and had two RBI.

Tossing her 16th complete game of the season, Cherlyn Trujillo struck out five batters as she improved her record to 13-8.

Scoring 17 runs on 18 hits, the only other time U-Mary has scored more runs in an NSIC contest was back on April 5, 2012 against MSU Moorhead when it scored 20.

GAME 2

U-Mary carried its momentum into the beginning of the second game as Brown's lead off home run sparked as three-run first inning as the Marauders went on to win 5-0.

The starting pitcher for game two, Erin Keen helped her own cause at the plate going 2-of-2 with an RBI.  In the circle, Keen tied her season-high with 11 strikeouts and picked up her second shutout of the season, improving to 13-7 on the year.

After Brown's home run to start the game, Norman walked and Gamboa followed with her fourth extra base hit of the day, a triple to right field to score Norman. Perales followed with a single to score Gamboa as the Marauders took a commanding 3-0 lead to start the game.

The Beavers were only able to muster four hits throughout the game. BSU did twice load the bases, once in the first inning and once in the fifth inning, but both occurred with two outs and the Beavers were never able to capitalize.

Looking for some insurance, U-Mary added two runs in the sixth inning as Mendez led off the inning with a single and Rodriguez followed with a double. Villalobos singled to the pitcher to score Mendez and Keen followed with an RBI single to give the Marauders a 5-0 lead.

Five runs proved to be more than enough run support, as Keen completed the shutout by not allowing a hit in the final two innings of play.

Gamboa was U-Mary's only other player with more than one hit going 2-for-3. Going 6-for-7 on the day, Gamboa is now leading the Marauders with a .424 batting average.
