Strong start fades as U-Mary splits at Dot Richardson Spring Games

With 13 hits and nine runs in the first game, U-Mary had just six hits and one run in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.—After a day off Monday, the University of Mary softball team was back in action Tuesday as it played its way to a split at the Dot Richardson Spring Games. U-Mary (9-6) opened with a 9-2 win over Felician College (3-5), before falling 2-1 to Cedarville University (5-2) 2-1.
 
Going 4-for-6 on the day, sophomore Alana Norman extended her team-best hitting streak to 13 games.
 
Game 1: U-Mary 9 Felician 2
 
U-Mary's offense got hot early and late in its win over Felician to open the day. The Marauders scored four first inning runs and added three more in the sixth to cruise to a 9-2 victory.
 
Taylor Mendez provided the firepower in the first inning hitting a two-run home run to left center. Mendez finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
With Allison Brown scoring on a wild pitch, Mendez's home run gave U-Mary a 3-0 lead. Julissa Perales followed Mendez with a home run to left to extend the Marauders lead to 4-0.
 
The Golden Falcons rebuked in the second inning with a solo homer to centerfield.
 
Felician added another run in the fourth with a one-out double followed by an RBI single to centerfield. The Golden Falcons had the bases loaded with one out, but Keen struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Up  4-2, the Marauders added a run in the bottom of the inning as Kristin Ormsby singled down the left field line to score Erin Keen, who reached on a throwing error.
 
Pitching 4.1 innings and picking up seven strikeouts, Keen was relieved in the fifth inning by Cherlyn Trujillo with runners on first and second. Trujillo retired the next two batters to get the Marauders out of a jam.
 
U-Mary added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Francine Villalobos. The Marauders scored three more in the sixth on six hits and one Golden Falcons error as U-Mary held on for a 9-2 win.
 
With eight different players recording a hit, U-Mary finished with 13 hits to Felicians six, while committing just one error to the Golden Falcons four. The Marauders stole seven bases to Felicians zero.
 
Game 2: U-Mary 1 Cedarville 2
 
U-Mary's offense stalled in game two not scoring until the sixth inning as it fell 2-1 to Cedarville to close the day.
 
Finishing 1-of-3 with a double, Villalobos was one of six players with a hit for the Marauders.
 
With neither team scoring through two innings, the Yellowjackets rallied in the third inning. With an RBI single to leadoff the inning, a Cedarville sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by the Marauders. With two outs Cedarville doubled to centerfield to take a 2-0 lead.
 
U-Mary had two hits in the bottom of the inning, but was caught stealing prematurely ending the inning. The Marauders finally broke through in the sixth inning as Norman walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Ormsby delivered a single through the left side to score Norman. Taylor Mendez walked to put runners on first and second with one out, but the next two U-Mary hitters were retired to end the threat.
 
Trujillo, who got the start in the circle for the Marauders, sent the Yellowjackets down in order in the seventh. Needing one run to tie, U-Mary went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning as it fell 2-1.
 
U-Mary actually outhit Cedarville 6-2 and had fewer errors (1) than the Yellowjackets. Both of Cedarville's runs were unearned.
 
Trujillo pitched seven innings and struck out nine, while allowing no earned runs.
