U-Mary tennis opens Spring Break Trip with win over Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla.--The University of Mary tennis team (5-1, 4-1 NSIC) opened its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 7-2 win over NAIA opponent Ave Maria University (1-4) Monday afternoon.

The duo of Hallie Welk and Kate O'Connell highlighted the Marauders effort improving to a perfect 6-0 at second doubles.

3. Bruss/Holt (UM) def. Buxton/Chaparro (AMU) 8-1

In singles competition U-Mary won five of six matches, with its only loss coming at first singles. Sarah Janes picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles improving her record to 3-3 on the season. Catherine Gibbens won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles for her third consecutive win. In her third match of the season, Meredith Holt made quick work of her opponent winning 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Anastasia Bruss improved her team-best record to 5-1 with her 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles and Kate O'Connell rounded out the Marauders singles action with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Welk and O'Connell's dominance at second doubles continued as the duo won 8-1 for their sixth consecutive win to start the season. Bruss and Holt won 8-1 to improve their record to 3-0 at third doubles.

U-Mary will be back in action Tuesday morning as it takes Hillsborough Community College at 7 a.m. (CT).
