Tennis set for Spring Break matches in Florida

U-Mary will play four matches in six days in Florida

Last Weekend: U-Mary (4-1, 4-1 NSIC) opened with a 5-4 win over Upper Iowa (4-3, 4-3) and concluded the day with a convincing 8-1 win over MSU Moorhead (2-2, 2-1). Despite losing both No. 1 and No. 2, an all-around effort by Marauders led them to a 5-4 win over the Peacocks. With a clean sweep at doubles and winning five of six singles, U-Mary cruised to an 8-1 win over MSU Moorhead.

Spring Break: Beginning March 3, U-Mary will be in Florida for Spring Break to play four matches in six days. The Marauders will take on Ave Maria University, Hillsborough Community College, Eckerd College and Wayne State University.

Schedule:

Date Opponent Location Time
March 3 Ave Maria University Ave Maria, Fla. 10 a.m.
March 4 Hillsborough Community College Tampa, Fla. 7 a.m.
March 5 Eckerd College Tampa, Fla. 1 p.m.
March 8 Wayne State University (Mich.) Tampa, Fla. 7 a.m.

Undefeated: The duo of Hallie Welk and Kate O'Connell are a perfect 5-0 at second doubles this season. O'Connell, who was named all-conference last season at first doubles with Sarah Janes, and Welk have not played together until this year, but have made the transition smoothly.

Adding Depth: Meredith Holt made her season debut last weekend for U-Mary going 1-1 at fourth doubles and 2-0 at third doubles with partner Anastasia Bruss. A transfer from St. Catherine's University, Holt has immediately bolstered the depth of the Marauders line-up.

Freshman: Anastasia Bruss, a freshman from Rochester, Minn. is making a mark early in the season holding a 4-1 record between third and fourth singles and a 3-2 mark at third doubles.

Janes: Sarah Janes has continued her strong play for the Marauders. Named All-NSIC in both singles andn doubles last season, Janes is 2-3 at second singles and 3-2 at second doubles this season.

Record-Setting: Last season was a record-setting year for the University of Mary tennis team. Since joining the NSIC in 2007, the Marauders did not have a single player named all-conference until last year when four players were named to the All-NSIC team. Finishing 7-7, the Marauders finished with their most wins since joining the NCAA in 2007 and picked up the program's only .500 season in the same time frame.

Key Returners: The Marauders are led by three returning All-NSIC performers from a year ago. Headlining that group is Hallie Welk (Sr., Bismarck, N.D. / Century HS), who was named first team all-conference for her efforts at second singles last year. Welk is joined by last year's No. 1 singles player, Sarah Janes (Fr., Bismarck, N.D. / Century), who was named to the All-NSIC second team. Janes' doubles partner, Kate O'Connell (Jr., Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), also returns for the Marauders. Janes and O'Connell were named second team All-NSIC at first doubles in 2013.

Newcomers: With the loss of two seniors and a 2013 All-NSIC performer, the Marauders have several holes to fill. Looking to fill those voids will be Catherine Gibbens (Fr., Rapid City, S.D. / St. Thomas Moore HS), Anastasia Bruss (Fr., Rochester, Minn./ Century HS) and Hannah Smith (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Bishop Machebeuf HS).

Up Next: U-Mary will be in action next as it hosts Southwest Minnesota State University on March 23 at 10 a.m.
