U-Mary women eliminated by No. 19 Minnesota State in NSIC quarterfinal

Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Plagued by turnovers earlier in the season against No. 19 Minnesota State University (23-5), the University of Mary women's basketball team (17-10) was bested again by the Mavericks due largely to turnovers. The Marauders committed 24 turnovers that led to 28 points by the Mavericks as U-Mary was eliminated by a score of 95-71 in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon.
 
Senior Linda Murray led the Marauders with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with eight rebounds. A transfer from Merced Community College, Murray finishes her career at U-Mary with 797 career points and 491 career rebounds good 29th and 15th place respectively all-time in Marauders history.
 
Junior guard Aubrey Davis paced the Mavericks with 20 points and four assists. First team all-conference forward Ali Wilkinson added 19 points and seven rebounds.
 
MSU controlled the pace of the game holding an 18-8 edge in fast break scoring, while winning the turnover battle 24-13.
 
U-Mary's only lead of the day came at 4-2 as Brittney Dietz connected on a lay-up off of a Lindsey Sand feed.  From that point Minnesota State went on a 23-6 run to build its lead to 25-10 with 12:48 left in the half. The Mavericks quickly built their lead to 18 just shy of the second media timeout.
 
U-Mary pulled within 12 several times including at 44-32. However, MSU extended its lead to 21 with a 10-1 run for its largest lead of the half. The Mavericks entered the break with a 58-37 lead.
 
MSU shot 52 percent from the field and 5-of-11 from deep in the first half to U-Mary's 41 percent and 2-of-7. The Mavericks held a 23-16 lead on the glass and a 30-18 edge scoring in the paint.
 
Things evened out in the second half as the two teams shot nearly identical from the field, with U-Mary holding a 26-24 edge on the boards. The Marauders were 4-of-12 from deep to the Mavericks 1-of-7.
 
Down 24 early in the second half, Hannah Larson and McKenzie Foster hit back-to-back threes to pull within 18. MSU answered with an 8-1 run to open its lead to 25. The Mavericks built their lead to as many as 29, before holding on for a 95-71 win.
 
For the game MSU outshot U-Mary 44-37 percent from the field and held a 47-42 edge on the glass. The Mavericks were dominant inside outscoring the Marauders 54-32 in the paint.
 
Dietz finished with 12 points and six rebounds for U-Mary. Larson added 10. Foster, and Sudan Saunders each had nine. Sand led the Marauders with four assists.
 
Going 3-of-5 from deep, Foster finishes her career with 179 made 3-pointers, good for second most in U-Mary's NCAA era (2006-07) and 837 career points, which ranks 26th all-time. Sand's four assists puts her at 12th all-time in U-Mary history with 262 assists.
 
The Marauders 17 wins this season marks the third consecutive season they have finished with 17 or more wins. With 14 conference wins U-Mary has won 13 or more games for the third straight year.
