Strong pitching leads U-Mary to sweep at Dot Richardson Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.—Day two of the University of Mary's trip to the Dot Richardson Spring games ended with the Marauders (8-6) picking up a pair of wins. U-Mary opened with a 4-1 win over Chestnut Hill College and closed with a 7-0 win over University of Sciences.

Allison Brown highlighted the Marauders offense going 4-for-6 with two home runs, and a double.

U-Mary 4 Chestnut Hill 1

Opening the day with a pitcher's dual against Chestnut Hill (0-1), U-Mary, led by Cherlyn Trujillo's no-hit bid, defeated the Griffins 4-1.

Two outs from a no-hitter, Trujillo went the distance for the Marauders striking out a season-high 11.

Emily Soller broke up Trujillo's no-hitter with a home run to left field with one out in the seventh.

U-Mary's offense got off to a slow start with its first three batters striking out. The Marauders threatened in the second with a leadoff walk by Taylor Mendez and a Demaree Rodriguez single, but stranded both.

Again in the fourth U-Mary threatened as it loaded the bases with one out. However, the Marauders were unable to take advantage of the extra out the Griffins gave them and the game was scoreless after four.

Leading off the fifth inning, Brown hit a solo shot over the center field fence for her first home run of the season to give U-Mary a 1-0 lead. Alana Norman reached on an infield double that tipped off the diving shortstop's glove and stole third, before being sacrificed home by Mendez.

Amber Gamboa led off the sixth for the Marauders with a double to right center. After Gamboa advanced on a wild pitch, Gamboa scored on a single to right by Erin Keen. Brown followed with a double to score Keen to give U-Mary a 4-0 lead.

Striking out the side in the fifth inning, Trujillo had struck out her previous five batters entering the seventh. With one out Trujillo got two strikes on CHC's batter, but Soller drove the ball over the leftfield fence. Trujillo forced a ground out and a line out to end the game and seal a win for the Marauders.

Brown was 2-of-3 with a home run and 2 RBI. Gamboa was 2-2 with a walk and a run.

U-Mary 7 USciences 0

Behind a complete game shutout by MeLanie Rordiguez, and a strong hitting effort U-Mary rolled to a 7-0 win over USciences to wrap up the day.

Making the first start of her career, Rodriguez scattered four hits and struck out 5.

Ashley Lewis was the Devils only player with more than one hit going 2-of-3.

U-Mary jumped ahead of USciences freshman pitcher scoring six runs in the first two innings.

Leadoff Brown put the Marauders on the board as she launched the second pitch she saw to left center. Four batters late Julissa Perales one-upped Brown with a two run home run to left center that scored Ormsby, who walked.

With Rodriguez sending the Devils down in order in the second, the Marauders added three more in the bottom of the inning. Keen walked with one out and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Mendez would walk to score Brown, who also walked. Eventually Perales singled with the bases loaded to score Ormsby, who walked, for U-Mary's only hit of the three run inning.

With Rodriguez holding the Devils at bay, the Marauders offense stalled in the middle innings.

U-Mary added an insurance run in the sixth as Brown singled through the right side with one out and Norman followed with an RBI double to left center.

USciences picked up two hits in the top of the seventh, but U-Mary's defense stepped up to end the threat and preserve the shutout.

Brown was 2-of-3 for the Marauders with three runs. Perales was 2-of-3 with three RBI.

U-Mary committed no errors and stole six bases. Brown and Ormsby both finished with two.
