LAST TIME OUT: The University of Mary defeated Winona State University in the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday Night. Despite a furious second half effort by the Warriors, the Marauders held on for a 72-66 win.
McKenzie Foster led U-Mary with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooing, including a 3-of-5 effort from deep.
Brittney Dietz was next in line for the Marauders with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The Marauders outshot the Warriors 45-39 percent. U-Mary was out rebounded 37-32, but held a 30-22 edge scoring inside. Committing a season-low eight turnovers, the Maruaders held a 15-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
Quarterfinal: With U-Mary's 72-66 win over Winona State on Wednseday, the Maruaders have advanced to the Quarterfinal of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament. Three seed in the North, U-Mary will take on the two seed in the south, No. 19 Minnesota State University-Mankato on Sunday at noon. The game and the remainder of the tournament will take place in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Sanford Pentagon.

What if?? If U-Mary wins on Sunday it will take on the winner of the Northern State vs. Augustana game on Monday at noon in semifinal competition. If the Marauders win against the winner of Northern State vs. Augustana, they will advance to the championship game held on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

SEEDING: Going into last weekend U-Mary had an opportunity to finish anywhere from 1st to 4th in the NSIC North. With a loss on Friday to Northern State University, the Marauders lost their shot at a Division crown. U-Mary's win on Friday and a split by Minot State University over the weekend left the teams tied for 2nd. The Beavers won the tiebreaker as they won both head-to-head match-ups this season.
The Records: Winning six of seven games, U-Mary is 17-9 and 14-8 in NSIC play (3rd NSIC North). The Marauders not played a game at a neutral site, but hold a 7-6 record away from home. Winners of 11 consecutive games, Minnesota State is 22-5 overall and 18-4 in the NSIC (2nd NSIC South). The Warriors are 9-4 away from home, including a 1-0 record in neutral site games.
The Series: The Marauders have defeated the Mavericks just once (1-7) since joining the NSIC in 2006-07. Defeating MSU 63-57 on Jan. 15, 2011, U-Mary willed its way to victory with five different players scoring nine or more points.
NSIC PLAYOFF HISTORY: U-Mary is 4-3 all-time in the NSIC Tournament. Last season U-Mary opened with an 84-62 win over Upper Iowa University behind dominant inside play. Free throws were the difference last season as Augustana, who attempted 41 free throws, knocked U-Mary out of the playoffs in Bismarck last season by a score of 74-59.
Earlier this season: Squaring off against #24 Minnesota State, who was leading the nation in fewest turnovers per game, U-Mary picked a bad night to commit their most turnovers of the season. Twenty-eight U-Mary turnovers led to 26 Minnesota State points as the Marauders fell 84-68. Shooting 42 percent from the field, U-Mary (23-of-55) actually outshot Minnesota State (28-of-78) by six percent.
Linda Murray went 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 from the field for 18 points. Behind 12 first half points,
Brittney Dietz also finished with 18 points to go with five rebounds and four steals.
