Marauders Complete Season Sweep of Golden Eagles with 72-65 Win

U-Mary has now won 15-of-16 meeting against Minnesota Crookston since joining the NSIC in 2007

Box Score Crookston, Minn.—Facing an undersized University of Minnesota Crookston team, the University of Mary women's basketball team asserted themselves inside en route to 72-65 win in Northern Sun action Friday night. U-Mary (12-8, 10-7 NSIC) held a commanding 46-32 advantage over Minnesota Crookston (8-13, 5-12) scoring in the paint.
 
U-Mary outshot UMC 44 to 35 percent from the field. Both teams finished with 46 rebounds, but the Golden Eagles held an 11-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.
 
Senior Linda Murray was dominant inside scoring 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, in addition to grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots.
 
Katrina Moenkedick led UMC with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Going down 5-0, U-Mary found itself trailing 16-12 early in the first half. The Marauders went on an 8-0 run that was started by back-to-back lay-ups from Sudan Saunders as U-Mary took its first lead of the night at 20-16. The Marauders opened their lead to as many nine before going into half with a 37-33 lead.
 
Murray had 12 of her 22 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting.
 
U-Mary scored the first four points of the second half to take a 41-33 lead, but Minnesota Crookston chipped away to tie the game at 43-43 with 15:17 left to play. The Marauders opened their lead up to six just minutes later as Hannah Larson nailed a three, but the Golden Eagles hung tough and took their first lead of the night on a three-pointer with 8:00 left to play.
 
U-Mary answered with a 9-1 run capped by a Brittney Dietz three to open its lead back to seven. The Marauders went on to win by a final of 72-65.
 
Dietz scored all nine of her points in the second half on 4-of-5 shooting.
 
For the game, Lindsey Sand was the only other U-Mary player in double figures with 13. Taylor Henningsgard added a season- and career-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Saunders finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
 
With the win the Marauders move into sole possession of third place in the NSIC North. U-Mary will be back in action on Saturday as it takes on Bemidji State University on the road at 4 p.m.
