Box Score Crookston, Minn.—Facing an undersized University of Minnesota Crookston team, the University of Mary women's basketball team asserted themselves inside en route to 72-65 win in Northern Sun action Friday night. U-Mary (12-8, 10-7 NSIC) held a commanding 46-32 advantage over Minnesota Crookston (8-13, 5-12) scoring in the paint.
U-Mary outshot UMC 44 to 35 percent from the field. Both teams finished with 46 rebounds, but the Golden Eagles held an 11-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Senior
Linda Murray was dominant inside scoring 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, in addition to grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots.
Katrina Moenkedick led UMC with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Going down 5-0, U-Mary found itself trailing 16-12 early in the first half. The Marauders went on an 8-0 run that was started by back-to-back lay-ups from
Sudan Saunders as U-Mary took its first lead of the night at 20-16. The Marauders opened their lead to as many nine before going into half with a 37-33 lead.
Murray had 12 of her 22 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting.
U-Mary scored the first four points of the second half to take a 41-33 lead, but Minnesota Crookston chipped away to tie the game at 43-43 with 15:17 left to play. The Marauders opened their lead up to six just minutes later as
Hannah Larson nailed a three, but the Golden Eagles hung tough and took their first lead of the night on a three-pointer with 8:00 left to play.
U-Mary answered with a 9-1 run capped by a
Brittney Dietz three to open its lead back to seven. The Marauders went on to win by a final of 72-65.
Dietz scored all nine of her points in the second half on 4-of-5 shooting.
For the game,
Lindsey Sand was the only other U-Mary player in double figures with 13.
Taylor Henningsgard added a season- and career-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Saunders finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
With the win the Marauders move into sole possession of third place in the NSIC North. U-Mary will be back in action on Saturday as it takes on Bemidji State University on the road at 4 p.m.
