Last Time Out: U-Mary had a strong showing this past weekend as they completed the Minnesota Duluth Invitational in West St. Paul, Minn. Feb. 23-24. The Marauders finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and showed improvements in pitching, hitting and defense from their first tournament of the season. U-Mary's pitchers combined for a 2.20 ERA in 35 innings, with 47 strikeouts and a .194 opponent's batting average. The Marauders hit .408 as a team with 18 extra base hits, including seven home runs. U-Mary made just three errors in five games.

UPSET SPECIAL: On the opening day of the Minnesota Duluth Invitational, U-Mary defeated No. 14 Fort Hays State. The Marauders jumped ahead early with two first inning runs and rode a dominant pitching performance by lefty Cherlyn Trujillo for their first win over a ranked opponent since they beat Minnesota State 1-0 on April 22, 2012. Trujillo pitched 6.2 innings and scattered five hits, while picking up a season-high 11 strikeouts. Kristin Ormsby was 3-of-4 in the game and drove in two.

Strong Showings: Allison Brown and Cherlyn Trujillo both put forth strong individual performances in U-Mary's trip to the Minnesota Duluth Invitational. Brown paced U-Mary's offensive attack going 12-of-18 (.667) with two doubles, a triple and three walks. Anchoring the leadoff spot for the Marauders, Brown reached base at a .714 clip, scored seven runs and swiped five bases. Brown had a hit in all five games with her top performance coming in a 4-for-5 effort against Lincoln University that included two doubles, two runs and two RBI. Trujillo, NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, asserted her dominance appearing in three games and striking out 27 in 20.1 innings pitched. Going the distance twice, Trujillo picked up a pair of wins and maintained a 2.75 ERA. The Senior captain picked up her signature win of the season with a 6.1 inning, 11 strikeout performance in a 5-3 win over No. 14 Fort Hays State on Sunday.

Power Surge: After hitting just one home run through five games, U-Mary has hit seven home runs in its last five games. In that same time frame the Marauders slugging percentage is .624 compared to .370. Taylor Mendez, Demaree Rodriguez and Julissa Perales each hit two home runs for U-Mary in the five game stretch.

Season Debut: Freshman MeLanie Rodriguez made her season debut against Lincoln University on Feb. 23. The righty went four strong with six strikeouts, while allowing just one run.

300 Club: Eight different players are hitting .300 or better for the Marauders through 10 games including Allison Brown, who is hitting at an impressive .543 clip.

Dual Threats: U-Mary's top two pitchers have had success at the plate through 10 games. Lefty Cherlyn Trujillo is 3-of-9 with two runs scored. Righty Erin Keen is 9-of-29 (.310) with six runs and five RBI.

Running the Bases: U-Mary finished last season with just 27 stolen bases in 43 games. Through 10 games the Marauders already have 31 stolen bases and are on pace to steal over 150 bases this season. Allison Brown is leading the team with 10 stolen bases and Alana Norman is next in line with nine. U-Mary stole a total of eight bases against No. 14 Fort Hays State two more than they have in any game since transitioning to NCAA play in 2006.

Hitting Streak: Sophomore Alana Norman is currently riding a team-high seven-game hitting streak. During the streak Norman is 10-of-26 with four runs scored and five stolen bases.

Small Ball: Six of Alana Norman's 13 hits this season have come on bunts. The lefty is six of eight on bunt attempts this season.

364: Freshmen Amber Gamboa and Taylor Mendez are both 12-of-33 on the season (.364) and both have scored four runs. A catcher, Gamboa has four extra base hits and four RBI. Playing multiple positions, Mendez has a .606 slugging percentage and has driven in 11 runs.

No Extra Bases: Alana Norman has not only excelled at the plate hitting .351 on the season, but the speedster has also showed off her arm strength in the outfield picking up four assists already.

Rebounding: After a strong freshman season, infielder Kristin Ormsby struggled at the plate last season hitting just .218. The junior has rebounded this year and is hitting .395 with a .605 slugging percentage. Ormsby is second on the team in hits, runs, RBI, and total bases.

Escondido Slugger: A native of Escondido, Calif., Allison Brown has the highest career slugging percentage of any U-Mary player since the Marauders transition to NCAA play in 2006 at .629. In that same time frame Brown ranks first in on-base percentage at .438, third in batting average at .369 and first in homeruns with 26.

C(herl)Y(n) Trujillo: With one of the most dominant single-season pitching performances in U-Mary history a year ago, Cherlyn Trujillo had the lowest single-season ERA (1.62) of any U-Mary pitcher in the Marauders NCAA era (nine seasons), the second lowest opponent's batting average (.219), most wins (17), most strikeout (207) and fewest walks per seven innings (0.87).

POY: Cherlyn Trujillo found herself among the leaders in the Northern Sun in several statistical categories in her first year with the Marauders last season. As a result, Trujillo was named NSIC Newcomer of the Year. With Trujillo poised to build off of last season's success, she has been named NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

What the Coaches Say: U-Mary finished the 2013 season winning six of their last seven to earn their way into the Northern Sun Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. The Marauders finished in ninth place last year out of 16 teams. With 113 points U-Mary has been tabbed to finish there again in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Coaching Debut: Named head coach just five months ago, All-American KJ Kelley will get her first chance to call the shots for the Marauders on Friday. A native of Rainier, Ore., Kelley joins U-Mary after four years as the assistant coach at Toledo and one year as an assistant at Vermont. Kelley began her coaching career at her alma mater, serving on the staff for one season at the UMass.

Filling Holes: The Marauders have a couple of holes to fill as they lost two major contributors from a year ago in Jessica Alvarado and Brittney Hadley. Alvarado hit .326 and reached base at a .409 average, while not committing a single error in center field. Hadley provided pop in U-Mary's lineup hitting eight homeruns and driving in 37 runs, while hitting .308.

Fresh Faces: The Marauders have added four new faces to this year's roster in infielders Francine Villabos and Alexa Hubbard, pitcher MeLanie Rodriguez and catcher Amber Gamboa to help fill those holes.

Senior Leadership: U-Mary is led by senior captains Cherlyn Trujillo and Allison Brown. Named NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Trujillo will anchor the Marauders pitching staff. With 26 homeruns and a career .355 batting average, Brown is U-Mary's top returning hitter.

Returners: Aside from the two seniors, U-Mary returns five other starters. Alana Norman, Demaree Rodriguez, Erin Keen, Julissa Perales and Kristin Ormsby all played significant roles last season and will look to do so again this year.

Up Next: Upon return from Florida, U-Mary will next be in action against Minot State University as it opens conference play on the road on March 25.
