Box Score WEST ST. PAUL, Minn.—The University of Mary opened the Minnesota Duluth Invitational Sunday morning with a 5-3 win over #14 Fort Hays State University. U-Mary concluded the day against Lincoln University. Leading 7-2 after five innings, the game was suspended and is expected to be resumed tomorrow.
The Marauders jumped ahead early with two first inning runs and rode a dominant pitching performance by lefty
Cherlyn Trujillo for their first win over a ranked opponent since they beat Minnesota State 1-0 on April 22, 2012.
Trujillo pitched 6.2 innings and scattered five hits, while picking up a season-high 11 strikeouts.
U-Mary's scoring started early as
Allison Brown led off the bottom of the first with a single. After advancing on a passed ball and stealing third, Brown scored as
Alana Norman, who walked, stole second. Norman eventually came around to score as
Amber Gamboa walked with the bases loaded to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead.
U-Mary added another run in the second on an RBI single by
Kristin Ormsby to right field that scored
Erin Keen.
FHSU countered in the third with a solo home run and an RBI double in the fourth to pull within a run at 3-2. Ormsby put U-Mary on the board again in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to right center that scored Norman.
After Trujillo struck out the side in the fifth, the Tigers rallied in the sixth with two hits and a walk that led to a run.
The Marauders added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and Keen came in with one out in the top of the seventh to close the door on FHSU as she picked up the save to preserve a 5-3 win.
Ormsby was 3-of-4 in the game and drove in two.
Taylor Mendez finished 2-of-3 and Norman was 1-of-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored.
The Marauders will be back in action tomorrow as they play three games. U-Mary will take on host school Minnesota Duluth at 9 a.m., follow against Lincoln, and conclude with in-state rival Minot State.
