Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – Down by double digits late in the game, the University of Mary men's basketball team scratched and clawed its way to set up a last second shot to force overtime but
Damonta Henry's shot would rim out in the Marauders 72-69 loss at Northern State university.
Henry came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points for U-Mary, knocking down 6-of-8 three pointers in the game. During one stretch he had made five straight. The freshman, who had forced two overtime games already this season on last second shots, was unable to replicate his previous magic. His attempt with five seconds remaining was halfway down before bouncing out.
The Marauders (7-18 overall / 5-16 Northern Sun) night appeared over when Tydan Storrusten hit a three pointer with 4:06 remaining in the game to give the Wolves (17-10 / 12-9 NSIC) a 66-52 lead, their biggest advantage of the night. Back-to-back treys by Henry sandwiched around a Seth Barchand tip-in for NSU closed the gap to ten points. After both teams traded baskets,
Chris Mason was fouled on a trey attempt and made all three free throws to make the score 70-63 at the 1:56 mark.
Jared Hannigan responded with a layup for the Wolves but Henry came back and drilled another three to bring the Marauders within six points.
The Wolves opened the door wider for the Marauders when Darin Peterka missed two free throws. Continuing to play more like a seasoned senior instead of a true freshman, Henry knocked down another three with 53 seconds left and U-Mary trailed 72-69.
Marc Musungayi then preserved the three point differential by blocking a Bachand jump shot. Mitch White attempted to score after scooping up the offensive rebound but his miss went out of play and into the possession of the Marauders.
Needing just one more three pointer to complete the comeback, Henry's shot to shock the Wolves instead turned into a Northern State celebration when the ball refused to stay down.
Led by Henry with 20 points, four Marauders reached double figures. Perfect in six free throw attempts, Mason scored 11. Musungayi had 10 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward
Bryan Jefferson came off the bench to also score 10 points, snare four rebounds and distribute two assists.
Additionally,
Germain Decoste posted four blocked shots and nine rebounds for the Marauders. He also had seven points.
Bachand posted a double double for the Wolves with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Just 2-for-9 from the field, he was 9-of-10 at the line. Storrusten and White both had 11 points.
The Marauders shot 44.1 per cent from the floor (26-of-59), including a 7-of-18 mark on three pointers. U-Mary was just 10-of-15 at the line. The Wolves shot just 42.9 per cent but made 9-of-18 three point attempts and made 15-of-21 free throw attempts.
U-Mary closes out the 2013-14 regular season at MSU Moorhead on Saturday, February 22, at 6 PM.
