MINOT, N.D. – In search of a Christmas stocking filled with toys and treats, the University of Mary instead returned home with a lump of coal. Despite a career-high 20 points from
Marquealis Edwards, the Marauders failed to keep pace with a proficient Minot State University squad in a 93-88 loss in their final game before Christmas break.
Despite scoring a season-high 88 points, the Marauders also allowed a season-high total. While U-Mary shot a solid 45.9 percent from the field and made 24-of-31 free throws, Minot State converted 52 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 12-of-26 effort behind the arc, and hit 29-of-37 free throws.
Isaac Lindquist provided the Marauders their largest lead of the day at 27-21 when the sophomore center connected on two free throws. After several ties and lead changes, U-Mary was unable to keep homestanding Minot State at bay. Eventually the Beavers took a 37-35 lead late in the first half and never trailed again.
Down by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Marauders closed within five at 57-52 following consecutive 3-pointers by
Alex Anderson and a pair of
Germain Decoste free throws. U-Mary proved unable to close the gap further. Minot State grew its lead back to double digits and held on for the Beavers fifth straight win over the Marauders and the tenth in 11 games.
One of four Marauders in double figures, Edwards hit 20 points for the first time in his career at U-Mary. The junior guard connected on three treys in the game and made 6-of-11 shots overall. He also had five assists and three steals.
Chris Mason posted a season-high 19 points, making 7-of-12 shots overall and 2-of-3 behind the arc. Decoste paired 11 points with a game-high eight rebounds.
Bryan Jefferson added 10 points off the bench.
Thomas Korf paced the Beavers with 21 points, making an amazing 6-of-8 3-point attempts. Everett Robinson made 6-of-9 field goal attempts, including a 3-of-5 mark behind the arc, and added 18 points. Michael Pelo also hit three treys and scored 16 points off the bench.
U-Mary slips to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the Northern Sun. MSU is 7-4 and 3-3.
Next up for the Marauders is a road trip to the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State University on Jan. 2-3, 2015.
