Last Week: The Marauders hosted winless Southwest Minnesota last Friday, and U-Mary kept the Mustangs winless even though the game went into an extra period.
Brittney Dietz netted a game high 28 points on 12-for-21 shooting,
Hannah Larson fired off 12 points, and
Sloan Turner swatted away four shots total, three of which came in the first three minutes of the game. The Marauders held the lead through most of the first half, but the Mustangs closed out the half on a 15-2 run to jump ahead of U-Mary 38-32 at the break. Southwest Minnesota extended their elad to 46-36 to start the second half, and the Marauders were forced to slowly chip away at the lead. U-Mary fired off a 9-1 run and closed the gap to 49-45 at the first media break of the second half, and finally tied the score at 50-50 with 13:02 left in the period. The Mustangs tried to pull away but the Marauders wouldn't let them get too far ahead and U-Mary finally got over the hump at 1:27 to go ahead 68-66. The Mustangs tied the score up after that, however, and the game went into overtime. In overtime, the Marauder defense finally stepped up and held the Mustangs to two points, make the score 76-70 final after Dietz's three-pointer put U-Mary up permanently. On the following Saturday the Marauders were tasked with taking on 8-0 Sioux Falls and U-Mary needed all 40 minutes of game time to get the job done. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and coasted through much of the first half, holding on to a 43-29 lead at the break. Sioux Falls extended their lead to 49-30 early in the second half and the Marauder defense made another statement as they held the Cougars to 15 second half points on 6-for-35 shooting. The Marauders went ahead 60-58 and Turner again blocked a potential game-tying shot and U-Mary held on for a 62-58 win.
History: U-Mary defeated the Beavers earlier in the year, 57-56, after Turner blocked the potential game-winning shot from Diondra Denton in the lane. The loss was the first on the year for the Beavers and was the first of a four-game losing streak. The Beavers lost to Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Northern State University, and Sioux Falls after their game against the Marauders.
Next week: The Marauders will have a break next week for Christmas and won't be back until the new year. The next games are on Friday, Jan. 2 against Minnesota Crookston, and Saturday, Jan. 3 against Bemidji State.
