Sizzling Sea Lions Outrun Marauders

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Bryan Jefferson scored a career-high 25 points for the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to slow a sizzling Point Loma Nazarene University offense in a 92-75 Sea Lions homecoming win over U-Mary.

The Sea Wolves (4-0 overall) shot 62 percent from the floor in the game, including a blazing 68.2 percent in the second half. Building on a 43-31 halftime showing, Point Loma made 15-of-22 shots after intermission that featured a 4-of-6 effort from behind the arc.

After a slow opening session, the Marauders (2-2) offense also caught fire. U-Mary connected on just 43.3 percent of its shots in the first half before clicking at 60.7 percent in the second on the way to a 44-point segment. The Marauders finished the day at 51.7 percent.

Point Loma scored the first six points of the game, built an early double-digit lead and never trailed in the contest.

U-Mary made an early run to get back into the game. Behind five points from Jefferson, the Marauders went on a 15-6 tear to pull within 25-23 with just over seven minutes left in the first half. The Sea Lions responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points. Point Loma would lead by at least 10 points the remainder of the game.

After scoring ten points in his first action of the season in the Marauders victory over Saint Katherine, Jefferson followed with a 25 point outburst off the bench against Point Loma. The sophomore forward hauled down ten rebounds, also a career high, to register his first career double double. He was 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 7-of-11 at the free throw line with three assists.

Damonta Henry added 23 points. The junior guard was 3-of-5 behind the arc and 10-of-15 from the field. He added three assists.

Jaycob Velasco chipped in 11 points. He was 5-of-8 shooting with five rebounds.

Six Sea Lions reached double digits. Hayden Lescault scored a team-high 17 points and dished six assists with two steals. Sam Okhotin made all four of his three-point attempts and finished with 12 point.

The Marauders next begin Northern Sun play when U-Mary hosts Minot State University on Saturday, Nov. 29.
