Bookend Goals by Marauders Still Leaves U-Mary Short in 3-2 Loss at Winona State

WINONA, Minn.  – Facing one of the nation's top teams, the University of Mary scored bookend goals but couldn't counter the trio tallied in the middle by Winona State University in a 3-2 Warriors home win over the Marauders.

Freshman Elizabeth Patterson scored her first collegiate goal early in the contest to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Emily Christensen served a corner kick that Patterson was able to get a boot on to score.

Wasting no time pulling even, Winona State's Alaina Kne scored in the 22nd minute. Just before half, Megan Riebau knocked home her third goal of the season in the 43rd minute.

The Warriors delivered what proved to be the knockout punch right our of intermission when Darian Molter scored her fourth counter of the season in the 49th minute of the game.

Sabra Bertsch drove home a goal at 70:07 to pull the Marauders within 3-2. It was the first career goal for the Bismarck sophomore.

The Marauders continued to press the Warriors defense over the last 20 minutes, generating five shots and two corner kicks. Patterson was just wide on a header off a corner in the 86th minute. Zara O'Hagan's shot in the final minute was stopped by WSU goalkeeper Rachel Oleson to preserve the Warriors win.

WSU, which is receiving votes in the national poll, held a 16-11 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on frame.

U-Mary goalkeeper Shelby Buttron and Oleson both had four saves.

Andrea Muller paced the Marauders offense, taking two of the squad's six shots on frame.

U-Mary is now 2-5-3 overall and 1-4-2 in NSIC action. WSU is 9-1 and 6-1.

The Marauders return home next weekend to host Concordia-St. Paul and #2 Minnesota State University on Oct. 11-12.
