MOORHEAD Minn. – A spectacular goal by team captain
Andrea Muller and a clean sheet by fellow senior
Shelby Buttron propelled the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at MSU Moorhead in the final road game of the season for the Marauders.
A scoreless battle between Buttron and Dragons goalkeeper Ashley Leintz didn't turn until late in the contest. After the Marauders won a corner kick in the right corner,
Emily Christensen served a perfect ball to Muller. The West Fargo, N.D., native, playing virtually in her back yard, managed to get her head on the ball and direct it past Leintz at 83:45 for the lone goal in the game.
The Dragons managed to counterattack in the final minutes but Buttron made a save in the 86
th minute to preserve the shutout and the win.
The final two minutes of the game appeared to get contentious as MSUM received one yellow card and U-Mary was awarded two.
Buttron recorded nine saves in the contest, including six in the second half. It was the fourth time this year she has registered nine or more saves. The shutout was her third of the season.
Leintz managed eight saves for the Dragons, with five occurring in the opening half.
Muller's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season and 16
th of her career. She has scored three goals in her last three games, including two game-winners.
The Marauders held a slight edge in shots (18-15) while the Dragons had a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams placed nine shots on frame.
U-Mary improves to 6-8-3 overall and 5-7-2 in the Northern Sun while MSUM slips to 3-13 and 2-12.
The Marauders close out the 2014 season at home on Sunday, Nov. 2, when U-Mary hosts Northern State University. Game time is 1 p.m. at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
