BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Mary women's soccer team played toe-to-toe with the nation's second ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato until a penalty kick turned the tide towards the Mavericks in a 3-0 Marauders loss.
U-Mary slips to 3-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the Northern Sun. Minnesota State improves to 12-0 and 9-0.
Down a goal early in the second half, a U-Mary defender was called for a foul in front of the Marauders goal. Dana Sarvino fired the resulting penalty kick attempt into the right side of the net at 53:14 to double the Minnesota State lead to 2-0.
The Mavericks began to roll and added a third goal in the 82
nd minute from Jenny Hoerter.
Minnesota State opened the game by putting significant pressure on the Marauders defense, earning three corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of play. While U-Mary and goalkeeper
Shelby Buttron managed to keep the first two attempts away from the net, the third resulted in the opening goal of the game.
After Emily Morris served a corner kick from the left side, the ball was touched back to her. Morris then played the ball back to Korey Kronforst, who scored her 10
th goal of the season at 11:32 into the match.
Playing against one of the nation's top defenses, U-Mary's best scoring chance came in the final seconds of the match.
Emily Christensen's free kick was just touched by leaping MSU goalkeeper Molly McGough, who deflected the shot off the crossbar. The Mavericks have allowed just two goals this season in 12 games.
MSU held a 15-2 edge in shot attempts and a 7-1 edge in shots on frame.
The Marauders begin a five-game road trip at St. Cloud State on Oct. 17.
