Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Setting an immediate tone with dunks on their first two possessions of the game, the University of Mary men's basketball team rolled to a comfortable 74-56 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Marauders never trailed and maintained a double digit lead much of the second half on the way to posting their largest margin of victory this season.
Devan Douglas skied high to slam home the Marauders first points of the game off an inbounds pass from
Mike Johnson.
Marc Musungayi then took a feed from Douglas for another dunk on the Golden Eagles defense.
The Marauders (5-14 overall / 3-11 Northern Sun) closed out the opening half on a 21-8 run to enter intermission ahead 37-24. The Golden Eagles (4-14 / 1-13 NSIC) closed to within eight early in the second half before a three-pointer by
Luke Scott with 13:48 remaining gave the Marauders a 50-38 lead. The U-Mary advantage remained in double digits throughout the remainder of the game.
Four Marauders posted double figure point totals for U-Mary. Musungayi scored a team-high 14 points on a 6-for-11 effort from the field. The senior forward and defending Northern Sun Player of the Week also had eight rebounds.
Jalen Jaspers made 6-of-9 shots and scored 13 points, chipping in four rebounds and two assists.
Germain Decoste connected on four of his five shot attempts and made both free throws on the way to scoring 10 points. He also had six rebounds. Douglas, making 4-of-6 field goal attempts himself, also added five boards and a game-high six assists.
Senior guard
Mike Johnson hit two treys and scored eight points for U-Mary. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native dished five assists and made three steals. Freshman
Bryan Jefferson came off the bench to pull down eight rebounds and distribute three assists.
Giorgi Koguashvili led UMC with 18 points. Brandon Burns added 17 points and five rebounds.
U-Mary held a 41-25 rebounding advantage and made 50.8 per cent of its shots. UMC made just 43.8 per cent of its shot attempts.
After winning three of four games on U-Mary's longest homestand of the season, the Marauders next play at #14 Minnesota State University on Friday, Jan. 31.
