Box Score Fayette, IA—With a chance to even its Northern Sun record, the University of Mary women's basketball team (7-6, 5-5) took care of business as it held on for a 64-60 win over Upper Iowa University (4-10, 3-7).
One of three players in double figures,
Lindsey Sand paced the Marauders offense with 15 points. Sand did the majority of her work at the line connecting on eight of 10 attempts.
Led by Lauren Buck's 18 points, the Peacocks also had three players in double figures. Buck shot 6-for-11 from the field and corralled eight rebounds.
Scoring the first basket of the night,
Brittney Dietz controlled the tempo of the first half scoring 11 of her 13 points in the opening act. Leading 23-20, U-Mary scored seven straight points to gain its largest lead of the night at 10. However, UIU responded with a 7-0 run of its own to bring the score within three, and the Marauders would enter the half with a 34-29 lead.
U-Mary held a decisive 46-30 edge from the field in the opening half, but went just 1-for-5 from deep as Upper Iowa went 3-for-10. The Marauders committed 11 first half turnovers that led to nine points for the Peacocks.
In the second half it was U-Mary's seniors that took control as Sand and
Linda Murray each scored nine points. The Marauders held the lead nearly the entire half, but surrendered the advantage at 10:39 following a Peacocks lay-up. U-Mary countered as it rattled off nine straight points to build its lead to eight with seven minutes left to play.
The Marauders held at least a two-possession lead until the Peacocks made things interesting with six second to go as a three by Buck pulled UIU within a basket. Sand connected on one of two free throws to give U-Mary a four-point lead and seal a 64-60 win.
For the second straight night U-Mary was dominant inside. The Marauders outscored the Peacocks 42-22 inside and held a seven rebound advantage. For the game U-Mary outshot UIU 43 to 32.
Murray recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Hannah Larson, who leads the NSIC in blocked shots, added three more tonight.
U-Mary will be back in action on Friday as it hosts St. Cloud State University, who it fell to on the road earlier this season.
