Sand, Foster Come Up Clutch as U-Mary Snaps Four-Game Losing Skid

Sand for 4-for-4 from the free throw line in OT and Foster hit three threes in the final six minutes

Box Score Winona, MN—Going just 1-for-8 from the field, Lindsey Sand came up big down the stretch going 4-for-4 from the free throw line to seal a 65-62 win for the University of Mary women's basketball team (6-6, 4-3 NSIC) as they defeated Winona State University (8-5, 4-5) to snap their four-game losing streak.

Sand's opportunities would not have existed if it were not for the marksmanship of senior forward McKenzie Foster. Scoring a game-high 18 points, Foster was 6-for-8 from three-point range. Foster tied the game at 54-54 to force overtime and scored the first basket of overtime to give the Marauders a 57-54 lead.

Connor Nagle paced the Warriors attack with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Nagle struggled from inside, but made up for it from range going 4-for-8 from deep.

The first half was a forgettable one for the Marauders as they shot just 8-for-33 from the field. U-Mary started the game just 2-for-17 leading to a 14-5 deficit. However, the Marauders were not totally listless in the first half as they responded with an 11-0 run capped by back-to-back three-point baskets from Foster. The run gave U-Mary its first lead of the night at 16-14 with 5:21 left until intermission. The Marauders lead would be short lived though as the Warriors went into half leading 25-22.

Brittney Dietz, who had a game-high 16 points prior to fouling out in the waning second of regulation, opened the second half with five straight points to give U-Mary back the lead at 27-25. In a half that saw seven ties and four lead changes, the Marauders took their largest lead of the night at 35-30 after a Foster three and a lay-up by Sudan Saunders. With the two teams exchanging blows the Warriors took a 54-51 lead with 1:34 left to play. Foster responded with a three to tie the game at 54-54 with 1:20 left to play that eventually sent the game into overtime.

Prior to fouling out Dietz was a catalyst for U-Mary in the second half scoring 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting.

After shooting just 24 percent in the first half, the Marauders rebounded to shoot 46 percent in the second.

In overtime, Foster three and back-to-back lay-ups from Hannah Larson gave U-Mary a seven point lead with 3:06 remaining. WSU refused to quit, however, as they answered with a three-pointer, two stops, and a lay-up to trail by two with 1:28 left to play.

Looking to work the clock, the Marauders forced a shot late in the clock as Sand committed an offensive foul with one minute to play. With the Warriors looking to tie the game Foster came up with a steal and advanced the ball to Sand. Sand gave U-Mary a four-point lead with 17 second remaining after hitting a pair of free throws. The Warriors answered with a three to bring the game within one, but again Sand stepped up to the line and knocked down a pair of free throw. WSU had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but U-Mary held on for a 65-62 overtime victory.

Sudan Saunders scored a season-high 10 points off of the bench for the Marauders. Linda Murray and McKenzie Foster each had eight rebounds to lead U-Mary on the glass. Sand added eight assists for the Marauders and Larson, who leads the NSIC in blocks, added two more to her season total.

The two teams shot nearly identical from the field, but U-Mary held a slight edge from the line going 15-for-18 to WSU's 11-for-13. The Marauders continued their dominant inside play outrebounding the Warriors by seven and outscoring them in the paint by 14.

U-Mary will be back in action tomorrow as its heads to Fayette, Iowa to take on Upper Iowa at 4 p.m.
