The University of Mary sets sail on its longest road trip of the season when the Marauders travel over 650 miles to square off against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University on Saturday, September 28, 2013, in Fayette, IA. Game time is set for 12 noon at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.

The Marauders are 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Sun... The Peacocks are 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Sun. Neither team has played a divisional game yet.
LAST TIME OUT
U-Mary claimed its second straight win of 2013 with a 17-10 home victory over the University of Sioux Falls. This was the first meeting between the two schools since the NAIA playoffs in 2002 and the first NCAA and NSIC pairing between the two... Upper Iowa recovered a fumble in the final two minutes of the game to set up the Peacocks winning touchdown in a 24-17 win at Northern State University. Â

U-Mary finished 4-7 overall in the NSIC and 1-6 in the NSIC North… Upper Iowa finished 2-9 overall, 2-9 in the NSIC (13th overall) and 0-7 in the NSIC South Division (8th).
HEAD COACHES
U-Mary's all-time winningest head coach, Myron Schulz owns a record of 99-56 in his 15th season at the helm of the Marauders. Synonymous with Marauders football, Schulz has been a member of U-Mary's coaching staff in 23 of the program's 26 seasons. He has directed the squad to six national tournament appearances and four conference titles. His teams owned a streak of nine straight winning seasons and the Marauders are 74-38 in conference games. Since starting the transition to the NCAA in 2005, U-Mary is 44-45. The Marauders are 30-34 in Northern Sun contests... Former U-Mary head coach Tom Shea is in his fifth season heading the Upper Iowa program, where he has compiled a mark of 11-35. A 1972 Dakota State University graduate, Shea has a lifetime ledger of 116-111-3. In 1990 he directed Peru State to an NAIA Division II national championship. Shea led the Marauders for six seasons (1991-96), compiling a record of 46-15-1, winning a conference title and advancing to the NAIA playoffs three times, including the semifinals in 1995.
FINAL SEASON FOR SCHULZ
Marauders Head Coach Myron Schulz, the man most associated with University of Mary football and the longest-tenured coach in school history, is resigning his head coaching position effective at the end of the 2013 season. Entering his 15th season at the helm of the Marauders football team, Schulz will become a faculty member in U-Mary's Gary Tharaldson School of Business. As U-Mary prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary of Marauders football, Schulz starts his 23rd season as a member of the squad's coaching staff. His 98 wins are more than any other U-Mary head football coach. Schulz directed his teams to four conference crowns and six playoff appearances while posting nine straight winning seasons at the start of his tenure. Schulz will start his teaching duties at the completion of the football season. A search for a replacement will begin later in the fall with hopes to have a new coach in place shortly after the end of the 2013 schedule.
THE SERIES/LAST MEETING
The University of Mary has won all four of its meetings with Upper Iowa University, but the two Northern Sun foes haven't faced one another since 2009. The two schools have played close contests in Fayette, with the Marauders out-scoring the Peacocks by a total of eight points in two games. The two contests in Bismarck are a little more on-sided with U-Mary out-scoring UIU by 46 points... 2006: The Marauders won the opening meeting 42-13 behind a stout defense and a strong running game. Led by Justin Fleck, who ran the ball 19 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, the Marauders piled up 232 yards on the ground while limiting UIU to seven yards rushing. Bayland Rippenkroger caught a touchdown pass and also ran for a score. Jesse Laber had 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks to lead the defense. Dwayne Croker had eight catches for 98 yards to lead UIU... 2007: Erik Kruse caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Blair Sandy with 8:09 to play in a 19-14 Marauders road win. Rett Thibodeaux kicked two field goals and Jesus Gallegos also caught a scoring pass. Rippenkroger ran for 122 yards on 32 carries for U-Mary and TC Hicks had 105 for UIU. Shawn Melland led the Marauders defense with 13 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss. He also had an interception... 2008: The Marauders rallied from a 15 point deficit to defeat the Peacocks 34-31 on the road.
Jamal Lomax, who ran for 106 yards, scored the winning touchdown with 2:35 left in the game. It was his third touchdown of the game. Jesse Kozak passed for 269 yards and two scores. Roman Penirian caught nine passes for 160 yards and a score. Chris Moody led the Marauders with nine tackles and James Patterson had 1.5 tackles for loss. Sam Epsteen led UIU with 152 yards rushing and three scores... 2009: Down ten points late in the first half, the Marauders ran off 28 straight points in a 48-31 home win over the Peacocks.
Jamal Lomax sprinted 50 yards for one score and Brady Martin caught two touchdown passes as U-Mary rang up 570 yards of offense. Lomax ran for 199 yards and Terry Newsome caught five balls for 128 yards and a score. Henry Lau passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns. Ben Curran passed for 324 yards for UIU. Sean Ziehlke led U-Mary's defense with an interception and a forced fumble and Xavier Cleveland had 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Â

QUICK LOOK AT UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY
Upper Iowa University possesses an explosive offense and statistically the top defense in the Northern Sun. Off to a 2-1 start with road wins over Minnesota Crookston and Northern State sandwiched around a home loss to Minnesota Duluth, the Peacocks lead the league in total defense (243.7 yards/game) and passing defense (117.7 yards/game allowed) and are second in total offense (497.7 yards/game) and first in passing offense (309.3 yards/game). Turnovers have plagued the Peacocks, who have lost the ball seven times while forcing four turnovers. JR QB Cole Jaeschke keys the Peacocks offense, throwing for 919 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 60.5 per cent of his passes. He has thrown three interceptions. Upper Iowa also has one of the best running backs in the league, carrying 71 times for 410 yards and five scores, an average of 5.8 yards per carry and 136.7 yards/game. All-conference wide receiver Keaton Horsch caught 60 passes for 1,084 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last season but is only third on the team in catches this season. Lucas Hefty leads the way with 22 catches for 383 yards and five touchdowns. Ethan Douglas paces the Peacocks defense with 22 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Jeff Arends also had 4.5 tackles for loss.
LAST WEEK: Facing a former familiar postseason foe for the first time as NCAA and Northern Sun opponents, the University of Mary defeated the University of Sioux Falls 17-10. A tight game throughout, the Marauders drove 79 yards on ten plays to score the winning touchdown with 4:41 left in the game when
Vince Ferrante plunged into the end zone from one yard out. Behind the passing of
Craig Bagnell and a new-found running attack late in the game, the Marauders compiled a season-high 418 yards while holding the ball for 35:52. Bagnell was 26-of-49 for 323 yards and a touchdown.
Nick Jolliffe caught six passes for 72 yards and his sixth touchdown reception in three games. Ferrante ran for 59 yards. The Marauders held the Cougars to 313 yards, including just 95 yards through the air. Nephi Garcia ran for 111 yards to pace USF. Defensively U-Mary allowed just 95 yards and three points in the second half.
Grant Singer led the Marauders defensive charge, making two tackles for loss, including a sack, forced a fumble and made nine total stops. The win snapped U-Mary's four-game losing streak to USF, all in the NSIC playoffs. The last meeting was in 2002.

Marauders head coach Myron Schulz captured his 99th win as U-Mary's head coach in the 17-10 win over Sioux Falls. The win was his first over USF. Schulz's first win was a 28-7 win at Southwest Minnesota State in the opening game of the 1999 season. The 25th win was a 28-27 home win over Jamestown College in 2001. His 50th win was a 32-8 home win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2004. The 75th win was a 37-13 win over Northern State at the Metrodome in the final game of the 2007 season. Â

Myron Schulz is the all-time winningest coach in Marauders history with 99 wins. Second on the list? Upper Iowa head coach Tom Shea with 46. Shea compiled a record of 46-15-1 in six seasons. He led the Marauders to their first winning season in 1991, the school's first conference title in 1992 and the first NAIA playoff appearance in 1993.

The top two passing attacks in the NSIC face off this weekend. The Peacocks average a league-leading 309.3 yards per game through the air. The Marauders are second at 290 yards/game. Defensively the Peacocks and the Marauders are first and third in the conference in passing yards allowed per game, 117.7 and 192.7.

HITTING THE HIGH NOTES

Grant Singer is having another tremendous season. The junior from Turtle Lake, ND, is second in the Northern Sun with 5.0 tackles for loss and his 28 tackles are third. Singer had the defensive play of the week in the win over Sioux Falls. With the Cougars at the Marauders seven yard line and threatening to take a lead in the second quarter, a blindside blitz by Singer separated the quarterback from the ball. Defensive lineman
Tylar Kist recovered the fumble and U-Mary remained in the lead.

SECOND HALF SHUTDOWN
The Marauders defense has been tremendous in the second half each week this season. In the opener against #2 Minnesota State, the Marauders limited the Mavericks to three points, four first downs and 77 yards. In a win over Wayne State the U-Mary defense limited the Wildcats to three points, five first downs and 92 yards after intermission. In last week's victory over USF the Cougars were limited to three points, six first downs, 95 yards, a 1-for-7 effort on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth.
FULL COVERAGE
Behind the booming leg of
Tyler Ryan, the Marauders have displayed tremendous kick coverage. U-Mary is allowing just 16 yards per kickoff return on six attempts, the top mark in the NSIC. The Marauders also lead the league in net yards punting at 41.2. Ryan is third in the NSIC in punting at 42.6 yards per attempt. Opposing teams have returned just six punts for 28 yards, an average of 1.5 yards/return. .
BEHIND THE LINE
The Marauders continue to create havoc behind the line of scrimmage, making 27 tackles for loss with eight quarterback in three games. U-Mary is 24th nationally in tackles for loss and 30th in sacks. The Marauders were also among the NCAA leaders last season. Fifteen different players have contributed tackles for loss.
I'LL TAKE THAT
The Marauders defense has forced an impressive ten turnovers this season, the fifth best total in the country. U-Mary has five interceptions and five fumble recoveries. The Marauders rank 12th in fumble recoveries and 14th in interceptions.
THE PLUS COLUMN
Through three games the Marauders are +5 in turnovers, tenth in the country. U-Mary has taken the ball away 10 times and turned it over five times.

Nick Jolliffe have had a tremendous connection through the first three games. The duo has combined for six touchdown passes, 22 completions and 251 yards. The pair had two touchdowns in the opener against Minnesota State, three at Wayne State and one against Sioux Falls.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
In his fourth season as the U-Mary starting quarterback,
Craig Bagnell has the opportunity to hold all the major career passing records at U-Mary. Trailing only Marauders Hall of Famer Chris Schwab (1996-99), Bagnell is second in passing yards (7,786 to 7,271), completions (607 to 587), and touchdown passes (73 to 59).
CLIMBING THE CHARTS II
John Oyloe also has a chance to move into the top career slot in tackles for loss and sacks. With 34 TFL, the senior trails only Brooks Laber (2001-05) with 38.5. Oyloe is fourth in sacks with 21. David St. Clair (1998-99) leads with 30.
