Box Score Durango, CO—The University of Mary men's soccer team opened their 2013 season on the road against Fort Lewis College falling 2-1. The Skyhawks, who are receiving votes in the national poll, scored a goal in the 85th minute to seal the Marauders fate.
Fort Lewis launched a flurry of shots at
Jack West, who made his first career start, but were only able to put six of their 26 attempts on frame. U-Mary attempted just six shots, two of which were on goal. The Skyhawks held a 9-1 advantage in corners.
The first half was a stalemate through 44 minutes, but with 15 seconds remaining until intermission FLC's Brandon Dooley connected on his first goal of the season to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
The Marauders came out firing in the second period as Jonathon Sellars, with an assist from
Liam Smallwood, knotted the game a 1-1 in the 49th minute.
As both teams battled back and forth, the game was suspended with 10:29 remaining due to lightning. After the delay the game appeared to be headed to overtime until Fort Lewis' Kroger Tamino scored with just five minutes left in regulation. The Marauders were unable to answer as they dropped their season opener 2-1.
U-Mary is back in action on Sept. 14 as they take on Texas A&M International University at 5 p.m.
