Janes, Welk Extend Personal Win Streaks and Lead Marauders to Split

Winona, MN – Hallie Welk and Sarah Janes ran their win streaks to six apiece in singles play to lead the University of Mary tennis team to a split in Northern Sun conference matches. The Marauders rolled past the University of Minnesota, Crookston 7-2 before they were nudged 5-4 by Minnesota State University, Mankato.
 
Welk, the NSIC Player of the Week who is playing number two singles and number two doubles for the Marauders, claimed two wins in singles and two in doubles on the day. Janes, playing number one singles and number one doubles, also recorded a clean sweep of her four matches.
 
In the opening game, the Marauders swept all three doubles matches to set an early tone. Janes teamed with Kate O'Connell for an 8-3 win and Welk and Rachael Scott also won by the same score. U-Mary's two seniors, Ashley Akers and Ashley Tuschling, claimed an 8-2 double wins. The two are former soccer players for the Marauders and completed their soccer eligibility last fall.
 
Janes shut out UMC's Holly Roepke 6-0, 6-0 in top singles play. Welk was almost as dominant in her match, defeating Katelyn Johnson 6-2, 6-0. Also picking up singles wins for the Marauders was Alexis Tatter in the #5 match and Stephanie Gerriets in #6 singles.
 
The Marauders would get off to a good start against the Mavericks in their second match of the day but Minnesota State would rally for the win in the lower singles matches.
 
U-Mary claimed two wins in doubles as Janes/O'Connel earned an 8-4 victory and Welk/Scott claimed an 8-3 win.
 
Janes and Welk then dominated their singles matches. A freshman from Bismarck, Janes eased past Brandi Dohmen 6-0, 6-1. Welk would do the same, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kelly Lechowski. Howeber, the Mavericks would win the other four singles matches to pull out the win.
 
The Marauders are now 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC. UMC slipped to 0-7 and 0-7 and MSU is 6-2 and 5-1.
 
U-Mary closes out its three game swing with a match against Winona State University on Sunday, March 3.
