Box Score Bismarck, N.D.—Despite
Ali Collins and
Shaunna Knife both reaching career milestones, the University of Mary fell to Bemidji State University 76-73 as Melissa Youngblut hit a game-winning three with one second remaining.
Just three points shy of the mark entering the game, Knife connected on a lay-up with 8:42 remaining until half time as she became the 13th player in U-Mary history to score 1,000 career points. With 3:41 left in the game and the Marauders trailing by four, Collins hit the second of two free throws and became the 14th player in U-Mary history to score 1,000 career points. Knife and Collins are the first teammates to reach the milestone in the same game in school history.
Knife was the Marauders top performer finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The senior from Bottineau, N.D. notched her 10th double double of the season and is now tied with Anna Skala for most double doubles in a season since the Marauders joined the NCAA in 2006.
Youngblut was the hero down the stretch for Bemidji State (11-3, 7-13 NSIC), but senior guard Shannon Thompson made U-Mary pay all night as she connected on five of seven attempts from three-point land and scored a team-high 17.
Despite being at a distinctive height disadvantage, U-Mary actually held a 32-20 lead in points in the paint and 13-7 in second chance points.
Down by two early in the game, U-Mary went on a 16-2 run to open up their largest lead of the game with 5:23 left until half.
Kelsey Peltier sparked the run with eight points including two three pointers. Unfortunately for the Marauders, the Beavers answered with a 16-3 run to take a one point lead late in the half before entering the break up by two.
U-Mary out shot BSU in the first half from the field 42-31, but the Beavers made up the deficit by shooting five of 12 from deep. Thompson hit four of her five attempts in the opening half.
The Marauders took the lead early in the second half and took their largest lead of the period as senior
Laura Petersen hit a lay-up to put U-Mary up 52-45. Bemidji State was responded again, this time with an 8-0 run to take a one point lead. BSU built their lead to six after hitting a pair of free throws with 6:47 remaining.
After chipping away at the lead, U-Mary came up with a much-needed stop as Knife controlled the defensive rebound with 36 seconds left to play. After a Marauders' timeout, senior
Taylor Luke found Knife inside for a layup to tie the game with eight seconds to play.
Out of timeouts, Bemidji pushed the ball up the court and found Youngblut at the top of the key for the game-winner with 0.8 left on the clock.
After turning the ball over 11 times in the first half, U-Mary committed just four in the second half. After shooting just 31 percent in the first, BSU shot 53 in the second.
Tonight's game marked the final regular season home game for five U-Mary seniors.
Shanara Clark, Collins, Knife, Luke and Petersen each played their last regular season game at the McDowell Activity Center.
U-Mary (16-10, 11-9 NSIC) will wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road with games against MSU Moorhead and Northern State. Playoff implications will be on the line as all three teams are tied for second place in the NSIC North at 11-9.
