Sioux Falls, S.D. – With only returning player from last years roster, the University of Mary tennis team struggled as they opened the season with a 8-1 loss to the Augustana College on Saturday, but rebounded with a 5-4 victory over Morningside College on Sunday.
 
Saturday
 
U-Mary was swept in singles and notched their only point of the day at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Sarah Janes and junior Hallie Welk, both Bismarck natives and Century graduates, defeated Katie Jesperson and Michelle Wadas of Augustana.
 
Augustana is ranked seventh in the Central Region and improved to 3-0 on the season.

After a tough loss Saturday, the Marauders rebounded with 5-4 win on Sunday. U-Mary's 1-3 each won their singles matches. Welk, Janes and Kate O'Connell also were a part of U-Mary's two doubles victories.

Weekend Review
 
The University of Mary tennis team went 1-1 this weekend after matches against Augustana College and Morningside College.
 
The match against Augustana, the NSIC defending champions, proved tough for the Marauders but the Vikings were unable to get the sweep when the U-Mary one-doubles team, Hallie Welk and Sarah Janes, beat the Vikings for their first loss of the season.
 
 Welk said, “I was excited we played well and beat them, it felt good beating a really well-known and great team but we knew if we played hard we could do it.” Welk added, “We played tough and stayed focused and it worked out.”
 
The next morning the Marauders faced Morningside College in a match that came down to the wire. U-Mary's third singles, O'Connell, battled a tough ten-point tiebreaker to chart the win for the Marauders.
 
The Marauders are scheduled to play again on Feb. 22 in Bismarck as they host Northern State and MSU Moorhead.
