Chris Mason scored a career-high 22 points for the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to slow the highly efficient Northern State University attack. The visiting Wolves made over 60 per cent of their shots in an 83-74 win over the Marauders.
A transfer from Phoenix College, Mason was 3-of-5 behind the arc and 8-of-14 overall to post a game-high 22 points. Also 3-of-4 at the free throw line, the junior forward yanked down eight rebounds. The native of Phoenix, AZ, has reached double figures in four straight games.
The Marauders (2-6 overall / 0-3 NSIC) held a 36-25 edge in rebounding, leading to a 21-9 advantage in second chance points. U-Mary shot a stellar 49.2 per cent from the floor (29-of-59) but Northern State (made 62.1 per cent of its shots (30-of-49). The Wolves managed a slight advantage at the free throw line (17-of-26 to 12-of-18) and on three-pointers (6-of-13 to 4-of-12).
Trailing much of the first half, a
Marc Musungayi dunk at 5:29 of the first half gave the Marauders their first lead of the night at 27-25. It was short-lived Jared Hannigan drained a three on the Wolves subsequent possession and Northern State led 38-35 at intermission.
Back to back treys by Mason and
Damonta Henry provided U-Mary a 49-46 advantage with 15 minutes remaining but again Northern State responded on its next possession, this time on a three-pointer by Skye Warwick.
Two possessions later Darin Peterka put Northern State up 51-49 at 13:28, providing a lead the Wolves never relinquished the rest of the night. U-Mary climbed within two points twice but could never find a way to pull even.
Three other Marauders joined Mason in double figures as Musungayi, Henry and
Devan Douglas all scored 12 points. Douglas, making his first start for U-Mary, also had four assists and two steals. Musungayi added six rebounds.
Jalen Jaspers contributed eight points and collected a game-high nine rebounds.
Trent Zomer scored 16 points to lead the Wolves. He was 6-of-8 from the floor and added six rebounds and three blocks. Seth Bachand had 15 points, Tydan Storrusten 14 and Hannigan 10.
The Marauders next play at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 13 at 8 PM.
