Strong Start Fades as Huskies Outrun Marauders

U-Mary lead by seven early but eventually fell by 20

Box Score St. Cloud, MN—Despite jumping ahead by seven early, the University of Mary (5-3, 3-2) stalled as it fell to St. Cloud State (8-1, 4-1) University in Northern Sun women's basketball Saturday evening.

With the Marauders leading 9-2, the Huskies responded with a 19-3 run that gave them a nine point lead. SCSU built its lead to as many as 29 in the first half as it cruised to a 100-80 win.

Brittney Dietz paced U-Mary with 23 points. After struggling from the field the past two games, Dietz shot 7-for-13 overall and 2-for-2 from deep.

One of six players scoring in double digits for the Huskies, Sam Price scored a game-high 28 points.

In a frenzied first half St. Cloud State shot an impressive 53 percent, while U-Mary struggled shooting just 31 percent. Due largely to 10 offensive rebounds, SCSU attempted nine more field goals than UM in the first half.

Down 21 with 13:14 left in the game, U-Mary went on an 8-2 run sparked by two McKenzie Foster threes to cut the gap to 15. The Huskies scored the next five points opening their lead back to 20. Ultimately, 15 was as close as the Marauders would come as the Huskies led by 18 or more the rest of the game en route to a 100-80 win.

U-Mary actually outscored St. Cloud State in the second half 46-44, but the 22-point first half deficit was too much to overcome. The Marauders outshot the Huskies 51 to 44 percent from the field and made six threes to SCSU's three.

With 21 offensive rebounds in the game, SCSU had a 27-12 edge in second chance points. The Huskies also controlled the point winning the scoring battle 28-9.  Linda Murray was second on the team with 15 points and Foster added 13.

U-Mary will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 20 as it takes on Minot State University.
