Strong Finish Culminates as Men's Soccer Ends Season With a Win

U-Mary went 2-2-3 over its final seven games including a four-game unbeaten streak to end the season

Box Score Rapids City, SD—The 2013 season is officially in the books as the University of Mary men's soccer team defeated South Dakota School of Mines (0-15-1, 0-12-1 GNAC) 2-0 in its season finale. After starting the season 0-8, U-Mary refused to give up as it finished its final seven matches with a 2-2-3 record, including a four-match undefeated stretch to end the season.
 
Adam Potter paced U-Mary's offense with two assists. Potter set-up Aaron Mc Elwee (3) in the 7th minute and Liam Smallwood (1) in the 56th.
 
U-Mary's defense was dominant throughout allowing just one shot on goal as Jack West finished with his second consecutive shutout, his third of the season.
 
The Marauders offensive attack was also in top form as they outshot the Hardrockers 12-3 overall and held a 10-1 advantage in shots on target. U-Mary also held an 8-5 advantage in corner attempts.
 
U-Mary came out fast as Jordan Pearce and Rory Pratt each attempted shots in the first two minutes of the match. Pearce's shot was saved and Pratt's missed wide. Keeping the pressure on, Potter found Mc Elwee to put the Marauders ahead 1-0 less than six minutes into the match. U-Mary put six more shots on frame before intermission as SDSMT's Timothy Tribbett recorded seven of his eight saves in the first period.
 
Checking into the game in the 51st minute, Smallwood made his presence known quickly as he scored in the 56th minute as Pearce fed Potter who found Smallwood to give the Marauders a commanding 2-0 lead as the held on for the win.
 
U-Mary concludes the 2013 season with a 3-10-3 record overall and a 3-8-3 GNAC record.
