Box Score Bismarck, ND—Getting a second crack at one of the top teams in the nation, the University of Mary posted a more favorable result playing #3 Simon Fraser University (10-1-1, 6-1-1 GNAC) to a 2-2 draw.
Joe Wood scored his first goal of the season in the 85th minute, which gave U-Mary a 2-1 lead.
The Marauders were able to draw first blood as
Rory Pratt took advantage of an errant pass by the Clan goalkeeper in the 39th minute to give U-Mary a 1-0 lead. The goal was Pratt's second goal of the season and second in as many games.
The Marauders took their 1-0 lead deep into the second period. Putting the pressure on U-Mary's defense, SFU's Colin Jacques nearly scored but the Marauders goalkeeper,
Jack West, thwarted his efforts. However, West was unable to corral the shot and Joseph Martin took advantage cleaning up the miss and tying the game at 1-1.
U-Mary responded controlling the pace and applying pressure to third ranked Simon Fraser. In the 85th minute Jonathon Sellars took a free kick that found Wood in front of the net for the go-ahead goal. Unfortunately, the Clan responded just 46 seconds later with a goal of their own. Juan Sanchez, in traffic, headed the ball past West tying the game a 2-2, ultimately sending the match into overtime.
Aaron Mc Elwee mustered a shot that was wide right and Simon Fraser attempted a corner but neither team put a significant threat together in the first overtime period. Despite both teams playing aggressively only one shot was attempted and no corners in the final period as the match ended deadlocked at 2-2.
West was kept busy by Simon Fraser's offense tying his season-high with nine saves.
For U-Mary (1-8-1, 1-6-1 GNAC) this is the second time it has tied a top-10 ranked team since joining the GNAC and the second time they have taken the Clan to overtime, both of which were at home. In 2012 the Marauders tied #9 Seattle Pacific 1-1 and fell 3-2 in overtime to 2012 NCAA Final Four participants, Simon Fraser.
U-Mary will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. as they take on Western Washington University at the MDU Resources Bowl in a GNAC rematch. The Marauders fell 3-1 to the Vikings in Bellingham on Sept. 26.
