Marauders Done in by Poor Second Half Shooting

U-Mary shot just 35 percent in the second half

Box Score Duluth, Minn. – Plagued by turnovers and poor second half shooting for the second straight night, U-Mary fell to Minnesota Duluth 71-61.
 
The Marauders (8-5, 3-4 NSIC) turned the ball over 23 times, while only forcing 12 by the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth (8-3, 5-2 NSIC) capitalized on U-Mary's mistakes by scoring 22 points on Marauders' turnovers.
 
Ali Collins paced the Marauders with 19 points and eight assists. Collins has now scored double digits in 11 of U-Mary's 13 games.
 
With five players scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs, Jessica Newman finished with a game-high 14 points.
 
Leading by as many as seven in the first half, U-Mary entered the break trailing 33-32. The Marauders outshot the Bulldogs 54 to 36 in the period, but UMD was able to score 12 points on 10 first half turnovers by U-Mary.
 
For the second straight night the Marauders struggled to shoot the ball in the second half. After shooting 54 percent in the first half, U-Mary made just nine of 26 (.346) shots from the field in the second half. The Marauder took their only lead of the second half on a layup by Collins with 16:13 to go in the game. A minute later McKenzie Foster hit a pair of free throws to extend the U-Mary lead to 40-37. UMD responded by going on 15-0 run to take the lead at 52-40 with 7:37 remaining. A three-point basket by Shaunna Knife with three minutes remaining closed the gap to six, but it was too little, too late as the Marauders fell 71-61.
 
The Marauders shot the ball well from the charity stripe (11-12). However, for the second straight night, U-Mary got into foul trouble that allowed UMD to score 21 points on 27 attempts from the free throw line.
 
Knife led U-Mary with seven rebounds. Knife was the only other Marauders' player in double digits with 11.
 
U-Mary will be back in action next weekend as they host Winona State and Upper Iowa.
