Marauders Out Scrap Bulldogs

Despite being out rebounded by 11, U-Mary was able to come away with a 63-53 win

Box Score Bismarck, N.D. – Facing the number one offensive rebounding team in the league, the University the University of Mary knew they would have their hands full on the boards against the University of Minnesota Duluth. Despite giving up 31 offensive rebounds, U-Mary was able to defeat Minnesota Duluth 63-53.
 
The Marauders (13-6, 8-5 NSIC) offense saw a well-balanced attack with seven different players scoring six or more points. Ali Collins led U-Mary with 12 points.
 
The Bulldogs (10-7, 7-6 NSIC) were lead by junior forward Katrina Newman. Newman scored a game-high 23 points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds. 

UMD controlled the boards outrebounding U-Mary 55-44. The Bulldogs had 31 offensive rebounds to the Marauders 13. Minnesota Duluth capitalized on the advantage with 23 second chance points.
 
U-Mary outshot UMD 48 to 23 percent in the first half, but 14 turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to stay in the game. Up 12-11 eight minutes into the game, the Marauders went on a 9-1 run to take their biggest lead of the half. However, Duluth responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead at 22-21. McKenzie Foster stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer as U-Mary retook the lead with 2:26 left in the half. After a UMD free throw Foster connected on another three. Less than a minute later Collins hit a three of her own and gave U-Mary a 30-23 lead going into the break.
 
Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the second half. U-Mary shot 25 percent (6-24) to UMD's 23 percent (9-39). Minnesota Duluth was 0-14 in the half from beyond the arc.
 
A slow start by the Marauders in the second half allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game at 31-31. It took until 12:29 remaining for U-Mary to finally make a basket as they retook the lead at 33-31 on a Shaunna Knife lay-up. After giving up a jumper on the ensuing possession to tie the game, the Marauders went on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a three pointer from Kelsey Peltier. U-Mary was able to extend the lead to as many as 12 on their way to a 63-53 victory.

In a game that saw 35 combined turnovers and 43 combined fouls, Minnesota Duluth shot just 17-74 on the night (.230), while U-Mary shot 18-49 (.367).
 
For the second straight game U-Mary's bench came up big. The Marauders bench outscored the Bulldogs 24-12, which would prove to be the difference in the game.
 
After going two games without a three-point field goal, Foster connected on 2-4 and finished with nine points for the Marauders. Knife scored just six points on the night, but made her presence known as she added six rebounds, five assists and a career-high six blocks.
 
U-Mary has now won five of their last six games. The Marauders will be back in action tomorrow night at 4 p.m. as they host St. Cloud State. The Marauders alumni will be honored during halftime of the game.
