Box Score Wayne, Neb. — Behind clutch free throw shooting from
Ali Collins down the stretch, the University of Mary (12-6, 7-5 NSIC) defeated Wayne State 57-54. The last time U-Mary defeated a ranked team was when they defeated #4 Wayne State 72-64 last season in Bismarck.
Collins led U-Mary in scoring with 15 points and added 9 rebounds. The senior guard was 4-4 from the free throw line, all of which came in the final 10 seconds of the game. Notching her eight double double of the season,
Shaunna Knife scored 12 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Marauders.
Averaging just seven points a contest, Addy Roller exploded for a game-high 22 points on 4-6 shooting from deep for the Wildcats.
Ali Collins connected on a three pointer early in the game to give the Marauders a 7-4 lead. The Wildcats, however, responded with a 10-0 run taking a 14-7 lead. Trailing by as many as eight, U-Mary rallied and
Shaunna Knife scored as time expired to close the gap to 27-26 at halftime. The Marauders outshot the Wildcats 38-28 percent and out rebounded them 25-17 in the period, but 10 turnovers left them trailing.
Wayne State's Roller nailed a three to start the second half, but Marauders responded with a three from Collins and lay-up from
Shanara Clark to take a 31-30 lead with 16:42 left to play. Leading nearly the entire half, U-Mary was never able to put Wayne State away. The Marauders led by as many as eight, but with 3:01 to go Wayne State (11-5, 7-5 NSIC) connected on a pair of free throws to close the gap to 53-51.
With eight seconds left in the game and neither team having scored, Wayne State's Jordan Spencer had a chance to tie the game, but was whistled for a traveling violation. U-Mary inbounded the ball to Collins who was immediately fouled. Shooting her first free throws of the night, Collins connected on both to give the Marauders a 55-51 lead.
Up four with 6.5 seconds remaining it looked as though Collins had sealed the deal for U-Mary.
Wayne State had a different plan as Ellen Hansen nailed a three pointer with 2.1 seconds to go to make the score 55-54. Again U-Mary inbounded the ball to Collins and again she knocked down a pair of free throws. This time the Wildcats were unable to answer as the Marauders won 57-54.
U-Mary's bench was key to the victory outscoring Wayne State's 19-6. The four different players scored off the bench for the Marauders including
Kaitlyn Haag with eight and
Lindsey Sand with seven.
U-Mary controlled the inside. The Marauders outscored the Wildcats 20-18 from the paint. Pulling in their second most rebounds of the season, U-Mary edged Wayne State 50-30.
In his first season as Head Coach,
Rick Neumann recorded his first career victory over a ranked team.
Next weekend will be Alumni Weekend for U-Mary as they begin a four-game homestretch with Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State.
