Box Score Bismarck, N.D. – Despite some late match heroics by freshmen
Alex Boyes and
Cam Hager, the University of Mary Marauders fell 3-2 in overtime to the Simon Fraser Clan.
Simon Fraser (7-1, 3-1 GNAC) took the lead midway through the first half as All-American F Carlo Basso scored his ninth goal of the season. Despite only scoring one goal, the Clan kept senior GK
Michael Frenzel busy as they put five other shots on net in the first half.
Frenzel would stay busy all night as he recorded a season-high 10 saves.
Early in the second half the Marauders (3-3-1, 2-2 GNAC) gave up another goal in the 51st minute to go down 2-0. From that point on the Marauders would play a man down as sophomore M
Aaron Mc Elwee was ejected from the match.
U-Mary was down, but not out. Despite being a man down, the Marauders managed to hold the Clan scoreless for the remainder of the second half.
With just under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Hager scored on an excellent right to left pass from freshman M
Adam Potter.
Right back in the game, the Marauders put the pressure on the Clan and controlled the ball down the stretch. With ten second left in the game, Frenzel took a free kick that was headed off the cross bar. Boyes was there to clean up the rebound and scored the game tying goal with :01 remaining in the game.
With all of the momentum, U-Mary seemed poised to upset one of the premier teams in the country. Sophomore F
Rory Pratt looked as though he was going to be the one to provide the win for the Marauders as he got free early in overtime, but missed just left.
Just a few minutes later, the Clan scored the game winning goal as Colin Jaques beat Frenzel left and the Marauders fell 3-2 in overtime.
U-Mary will continue GNAC action as they take on Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 PM.
