Linda Murray dominated both ends of the court but despite her efforts the University of Mary fell far short in an 80-63 loss at #3 Wayne State College. Despite the loss to the top team in the Northern Sun, the third place Marauders maintained a two-win advantage in the standings.
Murray scored a career high 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots, all game highs. She hit 11-of-15 field goal attempts and made 7-of-11 free throw attempts. It was the sixth double double of the season for the junior forward who was the lone U-Mary player to hit for double figures.
The rest of the Marauders struggled to shoot the ball, combining to make just 12 baskets in 49 attempts.
Kayla Schmidt hit three treys and scored nine points.
Ali Collins had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Wayne State was tremendous behind the arc, making 14-of-27 three-point attempts. All-American Ashley Arlen led the Wildcats with 16 points and eight rebounds. Clare Duwelius scored 15 points and Ali Schwartzwald added 14.
U-Mary scored nine of the first 11 points in the game before WSC responded with a 28-4 run to gain a 17 point lead with over six minutes remaining in the first half.
Murray would score the first five points of the second half and the Marauders cut the deficit to seven points. The Wildcats retaliated with a 17-2 run that featured three point baskets on five straight possessions to carve out a 52-30 lead with 16:48 left in the game.
The Marauders are 15-7 overall and 12-6 in the NSIC. Wayne State is 22-2 and 16-2. The teams have split their season series.
U-Mary ends the weekend at second-place Augustana on Saturday, February 11.
