Box Score Bismarck, N.D. – With the score knotted up at 60, Minnesota State Moorhead's Morgan Zabel took a pass from teammate Marisa Yernatich and hit the game-winning basket as time expired.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively as both teams shot below 35 percent from the field and combined for 33 turnovers.
Ali Collins had another outstanding performance for the Marauders finishing just one assist shy of a triple double. Collins scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and delivered 9 assists. Recording her fifth double double of the season,
Shaunna Knife finished the night with 15 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
The Dragons (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) were paced by junior post Megan Strese, who recorded 23 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs.
In a first half of runs, the Marauders started out strong jumping out to an 11-2 lead just over two minutes into the game. A 10-2 run by the Dragons midway through the half tied the game at 18-18. U-Mary answered big with 11-0 run that was sparked by Collins with five points and an assist. The Marauders would go on to lead by as much as 13 in the half. Despite making just three of their 13 three-point attempts, U-Mary entered the half leading 37-26.
The Marauders were able to maintain a double-digit lead until Moorhead hit three straight three-point baskets to pull within two with 12:21 remaining in the game. U-Mary was able to maintain the lead until Moorhead hit a three-pointer with 6:14 remaining to go up 55-52. U-Mary retook the lead on a pair of free throws from Collins with 3:32 to go. The Marauders held the lead until the Dragons tied the game up with a lay-up from Strese with 38 seconds remaining.
Looking to take the lead Collins slowly brought the ball up before setting up Knife with an open look. The shot rimmed off and was controlled by the Dragons who immediately called timeout. Yernatich took the inbound and found Zabel at the top of the key for a game winning three-pointer as time expired.
The difference for Moorhead in second half came from beyond the arc. The Dragons made six of their 11 attempts after making just two of 13 in the first half.
Despite having just one less turnover than the Marauders, Moorhead outscored U-Mary 19-9 off of turnovers.
With the loss, U-Mary falls to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Sun. The Marauders will be back in action next weekend as they face off against Bemidji State on Friday and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
