Box Score Bemidji, Minn. – Building a 24 point first half lead behind the hot shooting of
McKenzie Foster, U-Mary was able to hold off Bemidji State's 16-0 second half run for a 78-63 win. Foster finished the first half with 24 points by making eight of her 11 three-point attempts.
Bemidji State's (5-3, 1-3 NSIC) Kate Warmack led the way for the Beavers with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks on six of nine shooting.
The Marauders got out to an early 11-3 lead off of five points from
Laura Petersen and a pair of Foster three-pointers. The Beavers battled back and took a 17-16 lead with 10:59 remaining in the half. The Marauders retook the lead the following possession on a pair of free throws by
Brittney Dietz. BSU managed to hold the game close and trailed by six with 5:29 left in the half. Four minutes and 18 points later and the Marauders had their largest lead of the night at 50-26.
During the 18-0 run Foster hit all three of her three-point attempts.
Kelsey Peltier added a three-pointer of her own, as the Marauders did not miss a shot from deep during the span. Defensively U-Mary's five steals lead to seven of the 18 points. Hitting 10-17 three-point shots in the first half, the Marauders held a commanding 53-29 lead.
Down big at half, Bemidji State answered the call going on a 16-0 run to start the second. During the stretch the Marauders missed all ten of their shots and turned the ball over five times. The Beavers run closed the score to 53-45 with 13:23 left in the game. Responding to the run, U-Mary rattled off seven unanswered points to open the lead back up to 15. The Marauders were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way as they cruised to a 78-63 win.
U-Mary managed only 28 points in the second half on 6-25 shooting from the field. The Marauders were 0-5 from beyond the arc.
For the game U-Mary shot an impressive 22-24 from the line.
Lead by
Ali Collins' seven steals the Marauders recorded a season-high 17 on the night.
Collins finished the night with 19 points and five assists.
Shaunna Knife led the Marauders with five rebounds. Foster, Collins and
Kaitlyn Haag each had four.
Foster was unable to connect in the second half and finished the game with a career-high 24 points. With eight made three-pointers Foster broke her previous career-high of six. Foster fell one short of U-Mary's single game record set by Kayla Rogers on December 17, 2007 against Rocky Mountain College.
With the win U-Mary improves to 2-2 in the Northern Sun and 6-3 overall. The Marauders will be back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. as they square off with the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Marauders have won four straight meetings with the Golden Eagles and are 6-0 at Lysaker Gymnasium since joining the Northern Sun.
