Women Lose Nail Biter in Conference Opener

Box Score Bismarck, N.D. – Renewing their past conference rivalry, U-Mary and Minot State (3-0, 1-0 NSIC) squared off as members of the Northern Sun for the first time. Despite four Marauders' scoring double digits, U-Mary fell 74-73 to Minot State.
 
The Beavers' Savana Kingsbury scored the game-winning basket with 24 seconds remaining in the game.
 
Each recording 15 points, Ali Collins and Kaitlyn Haag led the Marauders in scoring.
 
Carly Boag for Minot State had her way all night finishing with a career-high 31 points.
 
U-Mary started strong leading by as many as many as 15 in the first half. Haag started the scoring for U-Mary with a jumper from inside that gave the Marauders the lead at 2-0. Haag would go on to finish the half with 10 points.
 
Back and forth early on, a three-point basket by Collins assisted by Brittney Dietz at the 8:22 mark extended the Marauders lead to nine. Three minutes later, McKenzie Foster hit a shot from deep to give U-Mary their first double-digit lead of the night.  The Marauders would lead by at least 10 the remainder of the half as they went into the break up 46-35.
 
With the Beavers showing zone defense nearly the entire night, the Marauders looked well prepared in the first half as they hit eight of 19 three point attempts and shot 53 percent from the field.
                                                           
A lay-up by Minot's Boag with 17:42 remaining in the game closed the gap to single-digits and the Beavers managed to keep the game within 10 the remainder of the game.
 
Four minutes later Sacarra Molina of Minot State hit a three-point basket to close the gap to 57-54 and bring the Beavers to within one basket for the first time since the 9:55 mark in the first half. Despite tying the game just minutes later, Minot State was not able to take the lead until the 4:13 mark.
 
With the score tied and just 2:24 left in the game, Collins hit a lay-up and 24 seconds later Laura Petersen hit a pair of free throws to give U-Mary a four point lead. Minot State was not going to go away easy, however, as they hit a pair of free throws with 43 seconds remaining to close the game to one.
 
Looking to ice the game, the Marauders turned the ball over with 26 seconds left in the game leading to a basket by the Beavers.
 
The Marauders had a chance to win the game, but failed to convert on their final possession as they fell 74-73.
 
U-Mary struggled in the second half connecting on just one of their 11 three-point attempts and turning the ball over 10 times. Minot State took advantage of U-Mary's mistakes by scoring 13 points off of turnovers.
 
Foster (12) and Dietz (10) each finished the game in double figures. Collins tied her career high in assists with seven.
 
Shaunna Knife was limited to just nine shot attempts, but was still able to make an impact finishing with eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
 
U-Mary (4-2, 0-1 NSIC) will continue Northern Sun action next weekend as they host Northern State and MSU-Moorhead.
